Our Story

WoodenBoat is a magazine, a school, a store, and a show that gives all boaters, designers, builders, and dreamers access to experience. Through the magazine, we tell meaningful stories about the exciting things that wooden boats and their owners are doing around the world, we take you aboard boats of note, and we tap experienced builders’ and yards’ best methods for building and maintenance. Jon Wilson founded the company in September 1974 with the publication of the first issue of WoodenBoat magazine—which he assembled from his off-the-grid cabin in North Brooksville, Maine. He sold 400 individual copies and signed up 200 subscribers at the Newport Sailboat Show that year, and WoodenBoat has been thriving ever since—and diversifying. https://www.woodenboat.com/woodenboat-publications-brooklin-maine
