Built in Washington and launched in Essex, POLARIS is a gleaming, Coast Guard–inspected Viking ship now calling Gloucester, MA, home. Based on a 1,000-year-old design, she’s more than a replica—she’s a floating classroom for teamwork, sail training, and hands-on history.

🧭 Why Traditional Navigation Still Matters
In an age of GPS, knowing how to navigate with charts and compass is more than nostalgia—it’s essential seamanship. Coastwise Navigation by Jan Adkins teaches you to read tides, plot a course, and correct for current using time-tested tools. When electronics fail, these skills can keep you safe.

WoodenBoat’s own Classified Ad Manager, Autumn Charette, had an impromptu adventure with one of our most consistent display advertisers over the 4th of July holiday weekend. She was headed up to Moosehead Lake for some well-deserved camping on the water. A quick stop in Bucksport, ME led her right to Richard and Susan, who were passengers aboard a vessel in the American Cruise Lines fleet. They were on a pit-stop headed from Bangor, ME to Bar Harbor, ME via the cruise line. We are always amazed at how small the boating world is, even when the boats themselves are big!

American Cruise Lines advertises a full page with us on page four of our print and digital magazine. Although your company may not be exclusively wooden boat oriented, if you think that our readership would benefit from the advertisement then we would love to hear from you.

Our Story

WoodenBoat is a magazine, a school, a store, and a show that gives all boaters, designers, builders, and dreamers access to experience. Through the magazine, we tell meaningful stories about the exciting things that wooden boats and their owners are doing around the world, we take you aboard boats of note, and we tap experienced builders’ and yards’ best methods for building and maintenance. Jon Wilson founded the company in September 1974 with the publication of the first issue of WoodenBoat magazine—which he assembled from his off-the-grid cabin in North Brooksville, Maine. He sold 400 individual copies and signed up 200 subscribers at the Newport Sailboat Show that year, and WoodenBoat has been thriving ever since—and diversifying. https://www.woodenboat.com/woodenboat-publications-brooklin-maine
