Brookline's only public cemetery turns 150 years old this month.

The cemetery, a burying ground for residents and employees and a much-loved piece of nature in Brookline, is facing modern challenges -- including slowly waning space that requires careful management from the town's staff and a group of trustees.

As the Walnut Hills Cemetery marks a big anniversary this month, town employees and site trustees are brainstorming about how to stretch the cemetery's slowly waning space.

So far, the government shutdown which started last week has closed Brookline's two national historic sites and cancelled a Navy Band concert which was set for this weekend.

If it stretches on, it could start to affect the town government with delayed grants or failing federal safety net programs.

Legendary jazz pianist Ran Blake, who is celebrating his 90th birthday with a performance at First Parish in Brookline tomorrow, reflects on 45 years living in Brookline.

“Of course, there’s some very good things that are famous [today], but so much is forgotten,” Blake said. “I want people to develop memories, nostalgia for the past, as well as stay in the present.”

Over the 45 years he’s lived in Brookline, Ran Blake has watched the town evolve. But for a man famous for training musical memory, it’s no surprise Blake has never forgotten the good old days.
