Bi+ history is punk rock đź’ś
In preparing for Loraine's memorial, I've been hearing a lot of great stories about her (as if she could get any cooler). So, in the '90s when AIDS activism was at its peak, bi+ people were there. We don't hear that a lot, right? But that doesn't change the fact that we were doing the work. For Loraine, that work took many forms between advocacy, education, and art.
And baking.
As a way to raise funds for the "caring and cure of bloodborne disease," Loraine would make "p***y pies." According to one source, these were sweet potato pies with l***a lovingly sculpted right into the top. Another source says that they cheesecakes that were topped with "vulvic pears" that she'd ensure were anatomically correct. Either way, I'd like to enlist a bi+ baker to bring the tradition back. Thanks in advance!
According to Loraine's longtime friend, collaborator, and biconic OG, Lani Ka`ahamanu: "Loraine promoted Pussie Pie throughout the 90s. [A]fter removing the plastic wrap, she loved the ritual of carrying the exposed P***y Pie into the house, weaving through the party and placing the pie on the potluck buffet table."
Oh to be a guest at those potlucks!
