Mary van Laarhoven, or Mrs. Van as she’s known by students in Maple Grove, decided to take a step back from her teaching career to focus on her two kids and competitive marathon running. She called it one of the hardest decisions she’s ever made. Along with other upcoming races, van Laarhoven will compete in the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the marathon.

It was a celebration that came after years of planning and uncertainty. Brooklyn Center nonprofit CAPI recently celebrated the grand reopening of its newly expanded headquarters on Brooklyn Boulevard that officials say will provide much-needed additional services for immigrants.

Phase two of the Maple Grove Community Center renovation project has begun. This phase includes new indoor and outdoor aquatics space, an expanded senior center, a bigger indoor playground, an arts center and a new banquet hall that aims to serve as a destination for weddings and events.

Kris Holsen, a longtime teacher at Birch Grove School for the Arts, was recognized for her work as an elementary drama educator. The Minnesota Educational Theater Association awarded Holsen with the Theater Educator of the Year Award.

The city of Plymouth is taking a major step forward in its efforts to revitalize its city center. City leaders have selected Minneapolis-based Sherman Associates to develop a city-owned parking lot near Life Time and Plymouth Ice Center, Plymouth Mayor Jeff Wosje confirmed with CCX News. Sherman's proposal includes two-mixed use buildings with residential and commercial space.

Most commuters are familiar with rideshare platforms like Uber and Lyft, but Metro Transit is now offering its own public alternative in Brooklyn Park. On Oct. 1, Metro Transit launched Metro Micro in Brooklyn Park, an on-demand rideshare service designed to bridge the gap for residents who don’t own cars or need more flexible travel options.

Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park became host Wednesday to the very first Twin Cities AeroDefense Summit. While Minnesota might not be the first place people think of for aerospace and defense, event organizers say there are more than 300 companies operating right here in our back yard.
