The Hopkins girls basketball team started practice this week as they aim to defend the state class AAAA title they won in March.

Three talented juniors lead the way: post player Erma Walker, point guard Jaliyah Diggs, and guard Ava Cupito, who returns after missing most of last season with an injury.

On the first day of the NCAA fall signing period, Wayzata High School student-athletes put pen to paper and committed to play their sport at the next level.

In a ceremony Wednesday morning, a school-record 25 seniors- in 12 different sports- signed their National Letters of Intent at various Division 1 or Division 2 schools from across the country.

In this week’s CCX Sports Spotlight, John Jacobson profiles Maple Grove three-sport athlete Kaden Harney.

Harney's primary sport is football in which he completed 65 percent of his passes for over 1300 yards and 15 touchdowns while also running for 332 yards and 10 TDs.

Harney also plays basketball and baseball for the Crimson. Next year he will play football at South Dakota State University.

The Benilde-St. Margaret’s girls volleyball team ended their season with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-15, 27-29, 25-17) loss to Marshall in the Class 3A state championship match.

Avery Minor led the Red Knights with 19 kills while Sydney Friedly racked up 46 assists.

The Wayzata girls swimming and diving team racked up 605 points to win the Section 5AA championship. Maple Grove followed behind in second with Champlin Park placing third.

The Armstrong-Cooper girls hockey team lost 5-2 to Bloomington Jefferson Saturday on the first weekend of the girls’ hockey season.

Maddie Wahl and Abby Hanson scored for the Wings (0-2-0) who play at Shakopee Wednesday.

The Maple Grove football team saw its dream of back-to-back state titles come to an end with a 49-31 loss to Lakeville South in the state Class 6A quarterfinals.

Lakeville South’s first-team offense scored touchdowns on all seven of their possessions as the Cougars racked up 518 yards rushing.
