Homage to the culture….my culture. Every year, my entire family descends on this street. The Vincentian hub of Brooklyn . This corner, made and gave me the perspective that I have on most things today. My grandmothers decision many years ago, to purchase the house next door , would set off a chain of stability, and cushion for the family that no one could have imagined. This house next door has transcended many generations , and served as the the backbone of the family , wether through struggle , exploration, or just genuine connection.
As a young girl I helped my grandmother sell all types of caribbean paraphernalia to masqueraders , and revellers alike on this corner. Labor Day weekend in Brooklyn meant that I’d be up for 3 days straight, helping grandma organize her shed , and make sure we had every item , in every country available to everyone.
From Kiddies carnival , to Junior , to my first big girl costume, I always got ready here , gathered my friends and set off on foot for Eastern Parkway. It doesn’t matter how far I go from this place , everytime I come back , someone always recognizes Marcelle’s granddaughter lol.
Shout out to all the beautiful people who contribute to the vibrant , energetic and amazing culture that is the West Indies.
