Teamsters Spotlight: Lou Calamine — President & Principal Officer of Local 295, and Recording Secretary for Teamsters Joint Council 16

For more than 45 years, Lou Calamine has proudly lived the Teamster life. His journey began in the craft, spending 25 years as an Airborne Express driver before stepping into leadership. Over the past two decades, Lou has continued to dedicate himself to serving the hardworking members of Teamsters Local 295 and Joint Council 16.

Lou credits the strength of the Teamster contract—along with quality healthcare and a secure pension—for giving him the opportunity to raise three children and now support nine grandchildren, all on a Teamster salary. Through changing industries, multiple administrations, and the natural ups and downs of a 46-year career, one thing has never changed: his pride in being a Teamster.

Today, as President & Principal Officer of Local 295 and Recording Secretary for Teamsters Joint Council 16, Lou leads a tight-knit local of 1,800 members—brothers and sisters he calls “the best anyone could ever ask for.” His career stands as a testament to the power of solidarity, service, and unwavering commitment to the craft. That’s the Teamster way.

We are proud and thankful to call Lou a friend, and we deeply appreciate his friendship and support. A mentor and a great leader in labor, Lou continues to inspire all of us and strengthen the Teamster family.

Johnathan Cruzado, a fourth-year bricklayer with Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local 1 NY, shows how the union trades can transform careers. After 10 years in the military, Johnathan explored college but realized it wasn’t for him. He discovered Local 1, applied, passed the test, and found a career that matched his skills, mindset, and drive.

The apprenticeship provides hands-on training, essential skills, and experience tackling projects big and small. For Johnathan, it also offers camaraderie and purpose, connecting his military background to a supportive community. Programs like Helmets to Hardhats help veterans like him transition into the trades, providing tools, resources, and opportunities to succeed.
