Lauryn Smith, a master’s student at Howard, studies how air pollution travels and who it harms most. Using data from the 2023 Canadian wildfires, she showed how smoke reached D.C. and worsened air quality—especially for vulnerable communities. Inspired by her polluted hometown in Kentucky, Lauryn aims to improve forecasts and fight for environmental justice.

After the U.S. banned the international slave trade in 1808, the burden of sustaining slavery shifted to the bodies of enslaved Black women. Forced into early pregnancies, facing staggering infant mortality rates, and pressured to have multiple children, their reproduction was used as an economic strategy to expand the enslaved labor force. This exploitation left a lasting legacy — one that connects to the systemic neglect Black women still face in healthcare today.

Waverly B. Woodson Jr. was a 21-year-old medic in a segregated Black unit on D-Day. Despite being seriously wounded, he refused evacuation and treated soldiers for nearly 30 hours straight, saving around 200 lives on Omaha Beach.

Though recommended for the Medal of Honor, he was denied due to racism — no Black soldiers received the award at that time. In 2024, 80 years later, his widow accepted the Distinguished Service Cross in his honor. Historians and advocates continue to push for the recognition he truly deserves.

The U.S. is bracing for what’s being called the “college enrollment cliff.” Starting around 2025, the number of 18-year-olds is set to drop hard — a ripple effect from the 2008 recession when fewer children were born. By 2029, that’s nearly a 10% decline, and by the late 2030s, almost 15% fewer young people ready to step onto campuses. Translation: fewer high school grads, fewer college freshmen, and a shake-up for schools that have built their budgets and reputations on steady enrollment.

For higher ed, this isn’t just a dip in numbers — it’s survival mode. Smaller schools may shutter, bigger ones will scramble to pull in students from abroad, adult learners, and the online space. But beyond universities, this shift cuts deeper: it shapes the future workforce, the strength of local economies, and the opportunities available for the next generation. The cliff isn’t just about classrooms — it’s about community power.

Jasmine and Jordan Davis, siblings born with sickle cell disease, endured years of painful crises and hospital visits before receiving life-saving bone marrow transplants in 2019. Jasmine received stem cells from her mother and Jordan from his father, with blood and platelet donations supporting their recovery after chemotherapy and radiation. Today, Jasmine is thriving six years post-transplant, while Jordan is pursuing nursing, inspired by the care he once received. Thanks to donors, family, and dedicated medical teams, both siblings are now cured of sickle cell disease.

Tuskegee skies just got Blacker and brighter. At 20 years old, Isaiah Hand earned his private pilot’s license — the first TU student in nearly 80 years to do it through the relaunched Aviation Science Program. Standing right beside history, Kembriah Parker became Tuskegee’s first woman pilot graduate, breaking fear and barriers at the same time. Their flight isn’t just about licenses — it’s about legacy, resilience, and a future where Black excellence keeps taking us higher.
