“It’s not rebellion when the system is designed to kill you. It’s survival.”

When weapons technology is mysteriously trapped in the Sixth Century, humanity is trapped in a new dark age! As conflicts erupt, the clash of steel and the rattle of shields replace the sound of gunfire in America’s most violent cities. As chaos engulfs the world and tyranny threatens to sweep an inner-city community into the darkness forever, one man’s plan to survive sows the seeds of A Dread and Glorious Kingdom!

"Sometimes you have to show yourself, your family, your homies, and the world who you are and what your ancestors have made…"

When hate groups and corrupt officials target his community as their personal fiefdom, Chessed must rise above his complicated past and embrace his destiny in order to survive! He and his allies make for unlikely heroes, but together they seek to unite their community and give “riding for the hood” a brand-new meaning as they forge a modern-day Camelot from the ashes of a fallen society. The question is…will they survive?

During Black History Month we’re highlighting different works of literature, film, television series, video games and anime. Today we are highlighting Afro Samurai! This anime spoke to our managing editor, Chase Bolling. As a young Blerd from the hood, the themes of reputation and revenge drew interesting parallels to the cycles of gang and street violence that he faced every day, making it an animation that will always have a special place in his heart.

Ralph Ellison was the first African American writer to win the U.S. National Book Award for his fiction novel The Invisible Man. The novel is an in-depth yet effortless tale about racism and its impact on the minds and souls of people of color in America, charting emotional responses from rage and revolution, to self-hatred and disillusionment. Beautifully and poignantly written, it’s a treasure of Black thought.

Many of us have heard about Mansa Musa, but the Mali Empire was founded by none other than the lion king Sundiata Kieta. Driven away by his siblings after the death of his father, Sundiata and his family found refuge in Mema where he prospered under the king, until the invasion of his homeland by the Sosso. Forced to return, with an army gifted by the king behind him, he formed a pact of brotherhood with the other young war leaders of Mali and together they defeated the Sosso at the Battle of Kirina. His story is truly worthy of a fantasy epic!

We cannot celebrate Black History Month without paying homage to the ancestors that chose death over the dishonor of slavery. Charles Deslondes was a leader of the German Coast uprising, where he trained, armed, and led over 200 enslaved people along the Mississippi River. Once captured, his final words were spent warning the other rebels to flee. His bravery and defiance shall never be forgotten.

We can't talk about anime in Black culture without a nod to the creator of The Boondocks, Aaron McGruder. Hailed by some as the first Black anime, this television series has brought comedy to Black homes for years. We’re looking forward to its return in 2022!

The Comet, by the iconic W.E.B. DuBois, is one of the earlier science fiction novels from a black author. This nuanced, post-apocalyptic survival tale dives into the intersectionality
of race, class, and gender relations as a Black man and a White woman find themselves forced into each other's company after a disaster in 1920's America. This touching short story contributed greatly to African American science fiction culture, making it an important part of black history.
