Happy Chuseok! The Korean Harvest Festival officially begins today and we have a Q&A from "Giving Thanks With Halmoni" author Kathleen Choi about the holiday.
Q: What is your favorite Chuseok memory?
Kathleen: One of my favorite Chuseok memories is playing a Korean card game called hwatu with my dad, mom, sister, and cousins. The loud “slap” of the hwatu cards always brings back fond memories of being together, laughing, and eating lots of delicious food!
Q: What is your favorite Chuseok tradition?
Kathleen: At Chuseok, we always dress in traditional Korean clothes called hanbok. When I was little, I didn’t always want to wear mine. But now, I love it! I love the bright, beautiful colors. It makes me feel happy and feel connected to my heritage.
Q: What are you most looking forward to about Chuseok this year?
Kathleen: This year, I am so excited to share the traditions of Chuseok through our book Giving Thanks with Halmoni. It’s one of the biggest holidays of the year in Korea, but not everyone knows about it. I hope kids and families everywhere will learn about Chuseok — and maybe even try celebrating Chuseok or think about incorporating some Chuseok traditions into their Thanksgiving weekend!
