Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) allows you to publish and sell books exclusively on Amazon. However, its policies and options can influence your ability to sell on other platforms, depending on the choices you make. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:
1. KDP Select Program
If you enroll your ebook in KDP Select, you must grant Amazon exclusivity for that title. This means:
You cannot sell the ebook version of your book on any other platform (e.g., Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble) for the duration of the enrollment (90-day periods, auto-renewable).
You can still sell the print version elsewhere.
The benefit of KDP Select is access to Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, plus promotional tools like free or discounted pricing for limited periods.
2. Not Enrolling in KDP Select
If you choose not to enroll in KDP Select:
You can sell your ebook on other platforms while still selling it on Amazon.
You are free to use distribution services like Smashwords, Draft2Digital, or IngramSpark to reach other retailers.
3. Print Books
Amazon has no exclusivity requirement for print books. If you use KDP for print-on-demand (POD), you can also sell your book through other platforms. However, if you use a POD service like IngramSpark in addition to KDP, be cautious about overlapping distribution channels, as this can lead to conflicts like duplicated listings.
