“Wolobougou” means “the place of gentle birth” in Bambara. It is the name of the rural maternity clinic founded by midwife Honorine Soma in Burkina Faso to porovide critical access to healthcare for women living in rural areas. Working in collaboration with the midwives, Camille Varenne crafts a compassionate portrait of care and resistance, from the clinic to the surrounding villages.

A legendary portrait of Paris during the month of May 1962 and filmed just after the ceasefire that ended France's colonial war in Algeria, LE JOLI MAI captures the people of Paris during the first springtime of peace, as they struggle to make sense of their moment in history.

For Honorine Soma, maternal health is about much more than pre-natal care. A trained midwife, Soma is the founder and director of Wolobougou, a clinic in the village of Farakoba, Burkina Faso. The name means “place of compassionate birth” — and the staff at the clinic embody that mission. Soma and her team provide a space for women to give birth in addition to ensuring women receive essential medical care and a healthy dose of empowerment.

Both a portrait of one woman and an understated chronicle of resistance, WOLOBOUGOU was made in collaboration with the midwives, whose participation in the writing and editing process informed the final result.
