🎛️Monitor Control🎛️ One of the most useful tools in mastering is a decent monitor controller. Being able to compare minute changes in a button press is pivotal to the decision making process.

Thankfully has an amazing monitor controller built into their MIO Console that allows A/B’ing multiple sources and destinations a breeze, and the Stream Deck + makes that even easier with completely customizable k***s, buttons, and hot keys galore.

The Mio Console also allows for tuning, time alignment, gain matching, eq’ing… and a whole lot more if you want to nerd out about that too 👀

🔎Zoom Out🔎 Sometimes you need to step back and take in the whole picture.

There’s a reason I don’t show the whole room in many of my photos (aside from my impeccable interior design choices 😏), mostly that the room I’m in isn’t “perfect” in the traditional sense for Mastering.

I’ve learned to compensate with multiple monitoring methods, actively listening, and years of experience to help inform the creative technical decisions I make when it comes to the music I work on.

Similarly, there is a reason why some folks choose to be selective with what their image is. What’s presented to you online isn’t necessarily the truth, but just an admittedly small perspective of what that person wants you to see, and how they want to be viewed. Take a step back, and see the whole picture for what it is and not just what someone wants to show you.

Thankfully, much of the pillar’s of my workspace are in place. Spotlight on the wonderful desk, it’s been a huge improvement over my cobbled together desk in a much smaller NYC apartment… now maybe to add some more acoustic treatment and reference monitors to the picture… 🤔

🏔️Keep Climbing🏔️ Gonna be honest, it’s easy to get discouraged. Whether you’re buried in work, trying something new, or progressing at a slower pace than you expect, it’s incredibly easy to beat yourself up because you didn’t meet those expectations you set for yourself.

All I can say is, keep going. A decade ago, I had no idea where I’d be. Im still a little unsure, and that’s ok. It’s fine to reset expectations, and with more experience, it will become easier to set and reach goals as you take on more fun and challenging projects.

I’ve often found taking a moment to look back reminds me of how far I’ve come, and I hope you can take a moment to do so too. These photos remind me that progress takes time. (2023, 2020, 2018, 2016)

🎚️TGIF🎚️Happy Fader Friday, even if your fader is a gain k**b. Still counts in my book.
Maybe one of these days I’ll stop posting close up shots. I’m still trying to get a good shot of my console, but it’s hard to take glamour shots of something that has so much going on in 1 rack unit 🫠

🌱Good Things Grow in Time🌱
Much like plants, some things in life need time to reach their full potential.
While seemingly dormant, there is unimaginable growth happening below the surface that many folks are not aware of. And that’s ok. In fact, visible growth doesn’t happen over night. Change doesn’t happen immediately. Your skills and music and creativity weren’t a flash into existence. Instead, they were nurtured, curated and pruned to be where they are today. And that’s pretty cool.
Keep growing at your own pace. Before you know it, your changes will be visible to yourself and others.

✖️💿HIATUS💿✖️ Not forever, just for a while! Lucky Cat Mastering is taking a hiatus from Mid September to November.
What does that mean? I will not be taking on any new work, and will be less responsive during this time. I still aim to correspond as needed, but will be unavailable for the majority of this time.
Thanks to all the artists, friends and family for making this happen, and can’t wait to pick back up in a couple weeks. See y’all soon!

🟩Green Lights Ahead🟩 This may not look like much, but a simple tweak has made the workflow of my Master Transfer Console so much more straightforward.

Peeking behind the nest of cables is a perf board with some transistors and a resistor. This takes my first insert and changes it from a “Bypass Switch” and turns it into a “Insert In Switch”, just like inserts 2-5!

A small change, but makes a world of difference in use, I learned a lot (and will always make sure transistors are not reversed in the future). Thank you and Ian for the help plus rekindling my need to get this done!

🗓Hey 2022🗓 Guess it’s time for a fresh start? So much has happened over the last year or so. I took a social hiatus, worked harder than I have in a long time (personally, professionally, emotionally), and have plenty to show for my efforts. It’s not over yet, and I’m not where I want to be, but I’m so thankful for the artists I’ve worked with and folks who trust me with their music.

Im excited to start the year off with a fresh perspective and renewed passion. Plus this desk with more leg room definitely helps.

Now… Who’s ready to make some music???

⚫️⚪️Not Everything is Black And White⚪️⚫️

While black and white has been the aesthetic here for a bit, it’s not necessarily the best way to describe what’s going on.

Bring on 2022! New desk, new colors, and new projects! Super excited for what’s in store and happy to have a new workplace that’s more accommodating and spacious.

Now the big question for 2022… there’s 3 empty rack units, what should I fill them with? 🤔

🎛 My Favorite K***s 🎛 On any master I do, you’ll hear any combination of these 3 k***s. Width, HPF, and tilt!

Although there are no specific markings for the tilt and width k***s, these impact the “felt” realm of music. I try not to focus too much on the numbers and rely on these to bring emphasis and highlight music where needed.

The second order 12db/octave HPF k**b gives clarity to the low end that is often called upon for unruly mixes or just to tighten up the low end of a track.

📝Schematic Sunday📝 Sometimes it’s nice to dive in and understand how things work. Today I’m trying to get back into this circuit design I’ve been too busy keep up on.
What is something you wish you knew more about? If that just so happens to be mastering, I’d be happy to talk ethos, approach, and more!
P.S. stay hydrated!
