“For more than two decades, New York-based artist Julián De La Chica has moved fluidly between disciplines. His body of work encompasses chamber music, opera, installation art, cinema, and, more recently, literature with his novel God's Punishment. Despite these different forms, his work consistently circles the same enduring question: What remains after memory begins to fracture?”

Thanks to Chicago Journal for this thoughtful feature on PIRET, the artists behind the film, and the dialogue between its visual language and music.

The feature also looks ahead to the October release of Julián De La Chica: Complete String Quartets, Op. 7—the world premiere recording of the complete cycle, featuring Hypnagogia and After Beauty, performed by the Kahlo Quartet.

Starring Estonian artist Anni Jürgenson, alongside Colombian performance artist and activist Chico Raro in a special appearance as "Maestra Gertrudis", PIRET continues the formal vocabulary that has gradually emerged throughout De La Chica cinematic work: black-and-white imagery, the 4:3 frame, long-duration takes, repetition, narrative ellipses, and a restrained visual austerity in which atmosphere takes precedence over exposition.

Music functions as one of the film’s primary narrative structures. Its conclusion is built around a movement from String Quartet No. 1, Op. 7, Hypnagogia, originally premiered by De La Chica at Carnegie Hall in 2016 during his debut as both composer and pianist. Ten years later, the complete Op. 7 cycle has been recorded by the Kahloquartet and will be released this autumn, coinciding with the festival circulation of PIRET.

A new chapter begins.

Irreverence Group Music [IGM] is proud to launch the , a platform exploring contemporary music, sound studies, artistic research, ecology, technology, and decolonial thought through conversations with composers, artists, scholars, and cultural practitioners from around the world.

Our inaugural episode, “Escucho el territorio” (Spanish only), features Susan Campos Fonseca , Otto Castro and Alejandro Cabezas Morera (Costa Rica) Alejandro Cabezas M, together with Rossana Lara (Mexico) Rossana Lara Círculo contra el soundscape, reflecting on listening as a political, creative, and deeply human act in times marked by ecological crisis, violence, and dehumanization.

Bringing together perspectives on composition, soundscapes, memory, ecocide, listening technologies, and decolonial thought, this conversation poses an urgent question:

How can we learn to listen to the world—and to one another—through a more conscious, situated, and humane practice?
