Maybe you’ve heard about Buke and Gase's upcoming “Lull”—or their New York farewell shows (two of three are now SOLD OUT).

A new portrait of Arone Dyer just dropped. As always, photographer Lucy Bohnsack’s images are fantastic—they really tell a story.

We don’t expect the band to play live after this, but this isn’t the end of new music from the duo.

Details on the April shows + a link to Arone’s statements in the comments.

Lookin’ sharp — a study in contrasts.

Bryce Dessner on the Academy Awards red carpet last night with Susie & Nick Cave, and mina tindle — and Matt Berninger backstage before his gig in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

As the great poet Walt Whitman once put it: “I contain multitudes.” (A line so good Bob Dylan later swiped it for a song title.) Which is why we love The National — now and forever:❤️‍🔥

Buke and Gase have planned a few shows, intended as a farewell to their home, New York State.
• Thursday April 16: NYC @ public records, 233 Butler St, Brooklyn, NY

• Saturday April 25: upstate NY @ The Half Moon, 48 S Front St, Hudson, NY

You may have seen the news last week on Pitchfork, Stereogum, or BrooklynVegan — some of which used the words “break up” in their headlines. They prefer to call it a “lull,” and hope you’ll read band member Arone's full statement.

We're linking to the blog posts in the comments — and you can judge for yourself what this sounds like...

We hope to see some of you in April.

Every year during GRAMMYS week, we can’t help but look back.

Back when we started this thing in 2001, awards weren’t even on our radar. That’s not why we do this.

Anyway, some pics from a release-party gig for The National, April 2005, somewhere in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Today is Bartees Strange's birthday — and to celebrate, we’ve finally put MAGIC BOY on streaming. (A few songs hit DSPs in 2024 alongside the vinyl and limited LPs are still available.)

MAGIC BOY collects songs Bartees wrote about 10 years ago while living in Brooklyn, near Nostrand & Eastern Parkway, and still finding his way in art, work, and friends.

“I didn’t care about much other than making music,” says Bartees. “I spent so much time on it. It felt so good to be obsessed with something in a new way. This record stirred something in me…this small snapshot of my life.”

It was his first release, before he’d settled into the name Bartees Strange. We worked with him to give it a facelift: revised sequence, plus cover art by The National's Scott Devendorf.

Bartees has come a long way since then. As much as we’re celebrating the record, tonight’s tour kickoff opening for Biffy Clyro in Europe definitely takes the (birthday) cake. He’ll follow that with a major summer tour in America opening for Tori Amos. All dates solo.

Either way, the gift is yours — plenty of chances to see Bartees and experience the magic IRL:
— Jan 30–Feb 12 — with Biffy Clyro across Europe 🇪🇺

— Wed, Feb 25 — solo show at Old St Pancras Church, London

—July 7–Sept 2 — with Tori Amos across the U.S. 🇺🇸

We are gutted to hear about the death of Tim Thomas who we had a long relationship through his roles with So Percussion and Bang on a Can. Through the shock, we remember the way he radiated joy, and joy for music, during the many times we were in his presence. His belief in art made him a force (along with his welcome sense of humor about the hard climb art sometimes required of us). Music is powerful. So was he.

There is a fundraiser live to help his family out in this very hard time: gofund.me/1dc78c490

🎂 Next Friday, January 30, is Bartees Strange's birthday. Of course we're planning something special… but Tori Amos and Biffy Clyro kinda beat us to it. So the gift is yours!

Starting next Friday, Europe + America will have plenty of chances to see Bartees performing solo, with dates running through the summer. He also has his own headline date on February 25th at St Pancras Old Church in London, England.

p.s. Vinyl LPs of his two Brassland releases, SAY GOODBYE TO PRETTY BOY and MAGIC BOY, are still available via our Bandcamp and Limited Run shops… and there’ll be new ways to experience the MAGIC a week from now *hint hint*

Fare thee well to Bob Weir & love to his family & anyone touched by the music he made. The best of America is found in its music, and Weir’s projects contributed more to that lineage than almost anyone. We’re still amazed our family has been given opportunity to uphold the traditions he tended in his lifetime.

To inspire your own listening we’ll point to a pair of songs associated with Bob and his bands that we go back to.

from “Unbroken Chain” by Phil Lash & Robert Petersen

"Unbroken chain
Looking for familiar faces in an empty window pane
Listening for the secret, searching for the sound
But I could only hear the preacher and the baying of his hounds"

from “Cassidy” by Bob Weir & John Perry Barlow

"Fare thee well now
Let your life proceed by its own design
Nothing to tell now
Let the words be yours
I’m done with mine"
