The second half of my shoot Friday had a much more gothic/creepy tone thanks to Bryan Sansivero's styling. I love how vintage and haunted some of these shots look.

Spent Friday shooting fashion with Ashley in a beautiful abandoned building upstate. I'm in love with these pictures!

Fashion/creative portrait shoot with Rachel. Shot at my apartment on a white seamless paper backdrop. Key light in a small umbrella high above and slightly in front/camera right of the model. Fill light from a 7 foot parabolic umbrella directly on axis, and a bare flash head on the backdrop, flagged from the camera to prevent flare (my fridge makes a large and effective flag!).

I tried to play around with some unusual angles, and of course the implied nudity lends an edge to the shots where you can see Rachel’s shoulders. These shots just looked best in black and white to me. I pulled the midtones up very high in photoshop which tends to smooth the skin to a kind of alabaster look.

Nellie’s headshots.

Shot in the studio on pure white. I really like the combination white backdrop, soft yet structured light and a simple camisole for dancers headshots. For some reason, horizontal composition always seems to work particularly well for these shots.

A couple of shots from my shoot for the amazing Laura Zukaite’s latest collection. This time she chose to use several friends and colleagues (including me!) as models , I’ll post shots of more of the models as soon as she does, but heres a group shot I put together of all of us, as well as a couple showing Ashley rocking a truly stunning hand knit, form fitting dress.

I chose to not blow out the background in the group shot to pure white because I felt that the transition from that, to the shadows at our feet was distracting. I really enjoyed playing with levels to create the composition. I used whatever I could find around the studio to try to ensure that we were as far away from just standing in a line as possible.

Ashley’s headshots, shot this weekend, outside in Park Slope and in my home studio. The second shot here is the result of the first time I’ve tried shooting in direct sunlight with a scrim to diffuse the light. It got a little tricky to juggle above Ashley’s head while shooting, but looks really nice, especially when I added a reflector underneath to fill some of the shadows under the eyelids and chin.

Some shots from a recent headshot session with Lulu. I still love shooting the really clean pure white background look, and with this shoot I also combined it with some outdoor shots around my neighborhood in Park Slope. Best of both worlds!

Another experiment with model Julia. I love the expression. Really seems to tell a story. again lit with a single, bare 250 watt quartz lightbulb. 50 mm lens at f/2.5. played with the curves to compress the tonal range in Photoshop as well as pulling the saturation down.

A shot from an experimental fashion shoot with Model Julia a few weeks ago. I was going for a Victoria’s Secret style lingerie glamour shot. Lit with the ambient room light and a bare 250 watt Quartz bulb on a stand above and slightly to the left of the camera. 35mm lens at f/2 on the D800 Compressed the tonal range and converted to black and white in Photoshop.

An unexpectedly awesome picture, taken while wandering around with my new Nikon D600. I don’t know why I chose to snap it, but I only realized when I revisited the shots that the words might have a meaning out of context.

Things they never tell you about photography. About 80% of your time is spent carrying absurdly heavy stuff. Just lugged this 50lb tree trunk about a mile.

I took a walk over the Williamsburg bridge today amid some of the most beautiful skies we’ve had in a while. It’s nice to see our city looking magnificent once again!

I headed down to the Williamsburg waterfront with my D800 and a tripod tonight to record what we’ll (hopefully) never see again. The eery sight of the bottom half of Manhattan completely sans power. Honestly it looked even crazier last night. They seem to have gotten to work and the new 1 World Trade is lit up once again. I find it particularly interesting that the lights on the Williamsburg Bridge abruptly end exactly halfway across. I guess it’s powered from two different boroughs!

This is a stitched panorama of 6 images, each a 1.5 second exposure.

A favorite shote from the Photobooth I put together for the @shesthefirst event this week, featuring Founder @tammytibbetts and Lindsay Brown; the campus chapter president of She’s the First Notre Dame who was just on the cover of seventeen magazine.

I set up the photo booth so that anyone could come and fire the camera by remote control. It was on a tripod and pre focused (I figured f11 would give enough depth of field). Light was from an Alien Bees AB 800 in a 7 foot parabolic umbrella.

The concept for the chalkboard background was cleverly thought up by Ashly Priest and Alexandra Beech but it fell to me to draw out the logo in chalk which was pretty nerve-wracking since we didn’t have any backup foamcore I think it ended up looking pretty good!

A favorite shot from a recent headshot shoot. Margie and I had a lot of fun shooting around the High Line and Meatpacking district. She is a straight theater actress and circus skills performer. Very cool!

Shot as I always prefer to shoot outdoor headshots…. Open shade, ambient light and reflector, 105mm lens at f4.

Another shot from the same shoot. The outdoor location and wide angle lens add such a different feeling to it. Much more contemporary and urban. The look was finished off by dialing down the exposure on the background a little and bringing Julia’s face up with a ringlight. What looks like late afternoon sunlight warming up her hair is actually a Speedlight with an orange CTO gel slaved off of the ringlight.

Another fashion shoot from a while ago that somehow didn’t make it to my old blog; this was mainly another makeup experiment.

I had wanted to play with extreme, vine like eye makeup and had drawn out this idea in advance. I had Julia (the wonderful model) do the basic foundation work on herself and then I went to town on painting in the embellishments. I’m not sure where the Idea of having her lie on the mirror came from but I think it defines the feel of the image. The end result has a lot of classic glamor in it to my mind, yet for some reason seems to hark back to the 1980s very strongly.

So. For my first post here, a shot from about a month ago that I never got around to putting up on the old blog. This is from an experimental creative shoot I did with my friend Jennifer as the model. She also came up with the concept which I think is awesome. It’s basically a take on the whole ” pretty girl ripping her own face off” thing but instead of gore, it’s all about the pretty colors bleeding onto her skin from her nail polish.

This was second shoot I’ve done where I tried my hand at makeup. I didn’t do the whole job here but finished it up and fleshed it out after the friend who started it had to leave before she was done. Lighting was a simple diffusion sheet with a light head behind it to create the pure white backdrop, while another head up close in a small umbrella was the key light. I believe I also had a Speedlight slaved and mounted up high as a hair light. This was my first full blown fashion shoot on my new Nikon D800. I’m loving that camera!
