Mari Lwyd began as a Welsh New Year tradition a ghostly horse-skull figure carried door to door, challenging households to song battles in exchange for food, drink and good fortune in the year ahead.

Over time, the tradition shifted. Some men used the disguise to intimidate, cross boundaries, and claim power under the cover of folklore. The church pushed back. Communities fractured. And Mari Lwyd nearly disappeared. But folklore doesn’t die, it adapts.

Today Mari Lwyd has been reclaimed as a symbol of community, resistance and protection. Revived through art, performance and storytelling, often led by women and marginalized voices.
