More than a million people shut down Lower Manhattan today for the Knicks championship ticker-tape parade, a turnout that may well make it the largest parade in NYC history. It’s been that kind of summer in the city: the Puerto Rican Day Parade, World Cup watch parties taking over the streets, and now a celebration 53 years in the making.

A few weeks ago, J.Lo got people talking about who gets to call themselves a New Yorker. The crowds that came together today to celebrate something bigger than basketball answered.

Today, we are all New Yorkers.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but in Brooklyn, it's also a celebration of how we gather: through food, music, family, history, play, culture, and community.

For BKMAG's first guest editor feature, Emily Anadu of The Lay Out shares where she'll be celebrating across the borough this weekend. After bringing thousands of Brooklynites together in Fort Greene Park for The Lay Out's 7th Annual Juneteenth Celebration, she's carrying that same spirit into the holiday weekend.

A dozen new community murals are coming to NYC this summer, and the city wants your ideas. 🎨🖌️

As part of the city's World Cup activations, Groundswell Community Mural Project is partnering with the Office of the Mayor, the Department of Cultural Affairs, and NYC Parks to create public artworks across NYC. Before the designs are finalized, organizers are asking New Yorkers to help shape what these murals will look like.

🗓️ Submit your ideas by June 18 at 11:59 p.m.

Brazil vs. Argentina, but make it dinner. 🇧🇷🇦🇷🔥

At Iguazu in Bay Ridge, there’s “almost nothing Brazilians and Argentinians won’t compete over,” but here that shared history turns into a menu built from both sides. Empanadas sit next to coxinha. Pão de queijo shares space with fugazzeta. The steak is grilled Argentinian-style over a parilla, charred and smoky, and sliced like they do in Brazil.
