Summer took a big, beautiful bow on Monday, when hundreds of thousands of people filled the streets around Empire Boulevard and Eastern Parkway for J’Ouvert and the West Indian Day Parade.⁠

The official festivities began before dawn with J’Ouvert, a celebration rooted in the emancipation of enslaved people in the Caribbean. By around 11 a.m., the festivities shifted to Eastern Parkway, where countless waves of crews, from labor unions and church groups to political organizations and local businesses, drank and danced their way toward Grand Army Plaza.⁠

What happens when you stop trying to control what comes next? For Rey Jaiteh, you make something.

The Gambian-born, Brooklyn-based designer is one of five designers taking the runway at The People’s Runway this year. His latest collection, “IDEK,” short for “I Don’t Even Know,” was born out of a year that forced him to reckon with uncertainty and find his way forward through making clothes.

Rey’s designs are all about the details: unexpected seams, sculpted shoulders, distinctive sleeves and the small touches that make you stop and look twice. “I want people to stop and actually look at the construction” of what he makes, he says.

After working long hours to fund his own designs and shows, The People’s Runway gives Rey a chance to finally bring that work to a wider audience. Meet Rey Jaiteh and the rest of this year’s designers on September 12 at Brooklyn Borough Hall Plaza. The event is free and open to the public.

Thirty years after his death, Nitehawk Cinema in Prospect Park is spending September looking back at his short but indelible film career. Nitehawk programmer Desmond Thorne curated screenings of all six films Tupac made during those four years, from Juice and Poetic Justice to Gridlock’d and Gang Related, along with Dear Mama, the documentary series about Tupac and his mother, Afeni Shakur.⁠
