This episode follows the deeply personal conversation with Christine by widening the lens from one family's experience to a global examination of autism, education, culture, and inclusion. Drawing on perspectives and professional experiences connected to the United States, United Kingdom, and St. Lucia/Caribbean, we explore what autism holds in common across borders, how culture and educational systems shape people's experiences differently, and what each region can learn from the others. Our central question asks, "If autism crosses borders, why can the experience of living with autism change so dramatically depending on where a person lives - and what can we learn from one another to do better?"

In this powerful follow-up to HushTalk’s special on autism, we sit down with Christine, a mother who candidly shares her journey from discovering her child had autism during the toddler years to proudly witnessing high school graduation. Christine opens up about the fear, insecurity, shame, isolation, educational struggles, advocacy, unexpected triumphs, and lessons that shaped both her and her child along the way. Together, we’ll explore what autism is - and what it is not, challenge harmful myths and misconceptions, discuss autism within special education, and examine where schools, families, and communities can do better. Most importantly, Christine shares what she wishes someone had told her at the beginning and offers hope and encouragement to parents just starting their own journey. This episode reminds us that a diagnosis provides information - it does not determine a child’s potential, worth, or future.
