“This is where happiness truly lies,” said Bed-Stuy resident Nathaniel Mary Quinn. He was pointing at his chest. His lip quivered. “It’s only when you begin listening to your heart, that you will discover your genuine self… And allowing your genuine self to be is not easy; it takes courage.

Quinn’s vivid, large-scale paper works are an assemblage of facial features which can be read as abstract-figurative works and that deal with the complex construction of identity.

Here's another of the many reasons I am doing this documentary on my best friend, "Nathaniel M. Quinn." Read what one Art Collector says about our rising star in an effort to build her collection.

"... an artist’s personal story is always part of the picture. Quinn, for one, grew up in one of Chicago’s poorest neighborhoods and earned a scholarship to Culver Military Academy. At 15, his mother died, and he came home to find that his father and four adult brothers were gone. Now in his early 30s, the rising Brooklyn artist never saw them again. “You can see the incredible emotion in his work,” says Cafritz.

"My work is highly biographical; I have come to realize that my work is heavily based on my family and my early years in Chicago. I grew up in one of the country's most impoverished and devastated public tenement housing complexes; when I was fifteen years old, my mother died, and I was abandoned by my family; I was the only child, having four adult brothers and a father. Perhaps subconsciously speaking, I am re-creating my family through my drawings and paintings, my way of living with them again, of giving them a place in a world that is much different from the world in which they were born and destroyed." -Nathaniel M. Quinn

Congratulations Nathaniel M. Quinn for your mention in the New York Times. This documentary keeps getting better and better! Stay tuned.

The idea of this group show, organized by the artist William Villalongo, is that art can look good and think tough at the same time, and so it can.
