WOODY GUTHRIE ALL- STAR TRIBUTE CONCERT 1970
Premieres March 2019 on PBS

An All-Star Tribute From 1970 Featuring Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Country Joe McDonald, Odetta, Richie Havens, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Peter Fonda, Will Geer and More! See It For The First Time Ever On PBS!

The Woody Guthrie All Star Tribute at the Hollywood Bowl in 1970 celebrated the work of America's greatest folk singer. Woody's son, Arlo Guthrie, is joined by Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Country Joe McDonald, Odetta, Richie Havens, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and others in this historic tribute concert, which was hosted by Peter Fonda and Will Geer. House band includes members of Linda Ronstadt's band Swampwater and Ry Cooder.

Although filmed in 1970, the footage was missing and un-edited until a few months ago when Nora Guthrie was able to track down and acquire this long-lost, raw concert film footage. After transfering the unedited footage, Nora brought in producer 4-Time Emmy Award winner Jim Brown and multiple GRAMMY Award winner, producer Steve Rosenthal, to create this tremendous concert experience. Mixed by the always briliant Kabir Hermon and Chris Shurtleff.

Last night we lost an irreplaceble part of the Magic Shop family. My good friend, producer/guitarist, East Village Icon, Jimi Zhivago passed. Through the years at the studio and The Living Room as well, he was the link to the music we loved and the New York City we wanted to live in. There are too many stories, too many calls, too many texts, too much life to share here. We have set up a special page to post memories.

Father's Day 2017

Sorry to say, my Dad, Murray Rosenthal passed away on Monday. If yours is still here, remember to give him a call or text today. Your time together is a gift.

So, What was my Dad like?

He was funny, present, noncomplaining, musical, inquisitive, loyal, liberal, extremely hard working and confident. He was a medic during WWII and he helped in the liberation of two concentration camps. He was also at times spoiled, selfish and at his worst unable to care how his actions affected those around him. In others words, he was human. And on Monday, he proved that again, by showing me how to fight hard for life and then accept death when surrounded by those that love you.

My Dad's effect on my life is fundamental. So much of what I do, what I like, how I act, how I love, who I hate, is an imitation or a reaction to him. I feel really lucky to have had him as my Dad, and I miss talking to him already.

During one of our last conversations, I asked him for some wisdom he could give me after being around for more than 95 years, and he thought for a moment and then flashed that Murray smile and said.
"Just keep hanging with the cool people"

Ok, Dad, I will. But let's face it "cool" lost an expert when you closed your eyes for the last time.

MARS is digitizing the Audio Tapes from the Lou Reed Archive. The collection contains more than 500 tapes, including studio sessions, live concerts, demos, unreleased recordings, and interviews. Yesterday it was announced that the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts has acquired the collection.
Lou, who would have been 75 yesterday recorded the albums "Set The Twilight Reeling" and "Magic and Loss" at the original Magic Shop Recording Studio on Crosby Street. Below is a photo Steve Rosenthal took while making Twilight with Lou in 1995 - along with some newly discovered tapes we just transferred.
Special thanks to Laurie Anderson Jason Stern and Don Fleming from Lou's Archive team for all their help. MARS engineers Kabir Hermon, Ed McEntee, Gabe "V" Wilhelm, Eric Gorman, Greg Teves and Alex Slohm have been working on the project non-stop.

The Next Chapter...

I can never replace The Magic Shop Recording Studio on Crosby Street, but my staff and I can honor its memory by continuing to create quality work.

We have started to do just that.

I’m happy to announce the opening of “MARS”, The MagicShop Archive and Restoration Studios, on Jay Street in Brooklyn. We will continue the legacy of The Magic Shop, by preserving, digitizing, and shepherding music and film archives from their dusty basements and storage lockers to your eyes and ears.

For the past month, Magic Shop Alumni Kabir Hermon, Alex Slohm, Ed McEntee, Gabe Wilhem, Matt Boynton, and Eric Gorman have been working on our first Archive in the new location. This has entailed organizing, digitizing, and cataloging analog recordings, live shows, field tapes, and sample libraries from the extraordinary career of Laurie Anderson.

Working with Laurie, her technical director Jason Stern, and the team at The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, Massachusetts, we are creating a searchable and playable Archive from which new shows will be curated annually. MASS MoCA is one of the largest centers for contemporary visual art and performing arts in the United States. Within their expanded gallery space, Laurie is planning to mine her archive for interactive audio installations.

Please contact me at [email protected] whenever we can be of help.

All the best,

Steve Rosenthal

CLOSING TIME

After an amazing 28 year run, I will have to close The Magic Shop Recording Studio. March 16, 2016 will be our last day open.

Everyone knows why I have to close, so there is little point in rehashing my story. My eternal thanks goes to Dave Grohl, The Foo Fighters and Lee Johnson for stepping up big time last year to try and save the studio from this fate. I would also like to thank the late, great David Bowie for recording Blackstar and the Next Day at the studio. It was an honor to have him and Tony Visconti working here for the last few years.

To Kabir Hermon and my current staff, and to all those who worked here at the Magic Shop over the years, you have my warmest gratitude. It's because of your passion and gifts that the studio survived as long as it did. To the talented artists, producers and engineers who passed through 49 Crosby Street over the years, I know it was you who made the Magic that made it special.

To my first family, Franne, Tracy, and Graham who were there in the beginning and my wonderful family of the last 18 years, Jennifer, Addie, Cole and Paige, I love u all beyond words. To my mom, Frieda, my sister Adrian and her husband Michael, and especially to my 94 year old dad Murray, thanks for your encouragement and for the love of music you passed on to me.

One last thing, I get that New York City is always changing and adapting like the living city it is. Maybe what I believe in is no longer of value, but it was for us and we lived it .

As the city becomes more of a corporate and condo island, some of us wish for a better balance between money and art, between progress and preservation, and we hope that one day we will see a reversal of the destruction of conscience and community we are witnessing.

Or maybe not...

After all I'm just a guy from The Bronx.

Although the Magic Shop will be gone. I won't! I intend to continue my Restoration and Archiving Work. So feel free to email or call.

Rock on!

Steve Rosenthal
