Since 2021, I have been on the booking team at Nowadays, shaping the musical and cultural landscape of the club and the wider Brooklyn nightlife scene in its post-pandemic era. I never dreamed of being a booker, but when I was invited to apply for the position ahead of their reopening in Spring of 2021, I saw it as an opportunity to continue my work of making nightlife more inclusive and more equitable than I found it. And for nearly 5 calendar years of club nights, nonstops, workshops, fundraisers, and community events, I did just that.
This month marks the final month of my programming efforts, as I’ve made the difficult decision to move on from my position at Nowadays. I am so grateful for all that I’ve learned, all my colleagues who’ve grown to be close friends and family, and all that my work has been able to accomplish for marginalized DJs in NY and beyond.
I am someone with familial roots in Brooklyn, who has lived in NY my entire life. I’ve experienced just about every facet of nightlife this city has to offer, from the age of 16. I have seen the golden era of the meatpacking district and downtown Manhattan, the Cielos, Santos Party Houses and Outputs in their heyday, and the humble beginnings of what Brooklyn nightlife has come to be. This scene was a completely different ballgame when I started out as a party goer, and even moreso as a DJ. There were far less women rocking parties, let alone black, brown and q***r. From very early on in my journey, I envisioned a different world for us, and I did what I could to actualize it, first as a promoter, then as a radio programmer, then as an education facilitator, and finally as a booker at Nowadays.
