Our friends at Blackmagic design have made a big splash with the pyxis 6K and 12K cinema cameras. I can see them becoming widely used and really popular. They offer incredible value. My one quibble is the fact that these cameras along with the BMCC 6K Full Frame don’t allow you to shoot in prores like the 6K pro and some of their other cameras do. I shoot in prores all the time, and I don’t want to have to convert Blackmagic RAW every time I shoot. If they could put prores in the PYXIS cameras, I think that would be amazing.

They also came out with the new Prodock for iPhone 17. We covered it at NAB this year. It’s a doc that gives your iphone 17 a lot more professional features. I’m curious to see who the customer is for this. Are iPhone shooters going to want to level up their game or will they just want to buy a real video camera at that point?

We featured Nikon/RED on our Year in Gear episode (now on YouTube).

Nikon seems to be making a real push for video. They recently merged with Red and produced the Nikon ZR which is a mirrorless camera with the RED raw codec. There’s been a lot of news about it, lots of reviews. I don’t think that camera is quite where it needs to be, but it’s a huge step for Nikon in terms of video.

For RED, their new cameras have the Nikon Z- mount which is the lens mount on Nikon mirrorless cameras, so now you’ll be able to use your Nikon glass on your RED cinema cameras. And if you’re like me, and you like Nikon vintage F mount lenses, you’ll be able to use those with an adapter as well.

If you haven’t already, check out our video from BILD and our interview with Geoff Coalter who gave us an overview of their mirrorless line.
