Recently I had the opportunity to speak with Nicole London, the director of the PBS American Masters documentary The Disappearance of Miss Scott just before the film screened at the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park on Saturday, August 30th.

The film is a documentary about Hazel Scott, a talented musician and performer, star of television and film, and an activist for civil rights. Scott rose to fame in the 1940s and 50s playing concert halls, starring in feature films and eventually having her own television show.

She was married to Adam Clayton Powell Jr. who served as a member of the House of Representatives in the 1960s. Powell’s efforts for his district are still remembered to this day with a street in Harlem baring his namesake, but Hazel Scott who was arguably the more famous of the two faded into obscurity after she was named a communist during the Red Scare of the 1950s and lost her television show. She then moved to France for a time where she triumphed. Upon returning to the US, things had change and Scott’s genre of music was no longer popular. She was still an attraction but did not garner the attention she had before moving overseas.

The Disappearance of Miss Scott tells her life story in typical PBS fashion, through interviews, archival footage, and animation. It highlights her career as a performer as well as her importance as a role model and an activist. In addition to her remarkable talent, we see how she was always outspoken and stood up for what she felt was right in a time when it was dangerous to do so.

Films like this one are important documents of history and are necessary for us to understand how far we’ve come and the dangers we face as culture should we forget people like Hazel Scott and the principles for which she stood. With this documentary Hazel Scott can be remembered and celebrated by audiences of this and future generations. The Disappearance of Miss Scott is screening on the PBS website as part their American Masters series.
