It’s Jazzuary on IN THE POCKET, and this week we’re continuing to explore jazz beyond the rulebook. After asking “what is jazz?” last week through standards and contemporary cuts, this episode focuses on jazz’s influence on hip-hop and house — music that isn’t technically jazz, but carries its harmony, swing, and spirit.
This week’s featured artist is Guru, and I’ll be playing a trio of tracks highlighting how his work with Gang Starr and the Jazzmatazz series helped bridge the divide between jazz and hip-hop in the early ’90s. We’ll also dig into selections from Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool, the landmark compilation that brought jazz cats and hip-hop heads into the same conversation at a pivotal moment.
