Big news on the Great Scott front! A chance it could come back with your help!
Hi everyone, Thank you again for signing this petition to save Great Scott. Great Scott is a place of community; for the people of Allston to come together to enjoy live music, for the artists to practice displaying their talent, and for the employees of the place itself, the bartenders, bouncers, a...
Thank you Great Scott. A very sweet gesture and gift. The weekly calendar documenting the final week of shows, from behind the bar to our house. Love you.
If you don't know by now, well, now, you'll know.
Happy Birthday to the nitrous that drives the operation, Cameron Keiber.
He would like a boat, so, please send him a boat.
The Beatings played our last show in Boston at Great Scott on May 18, 2019, 3 days after my 45th birthday. We were pleased it was a packed room filled with friends who had traveled from exotic places to be there with us (London, San Fran, Taunton, etc) but it was bittersweet because we knew this was the last time the five of us would play these songs together. What started with friends bouncing ideas off each other in a basement 20 years ago had run its course... and we were ok with that.
We had intended to record the set from the soundboard for posterity but learned when we got off stage that the file had become corrupted and was useless. These things happen. We resigned ourselves to the fact that only the people who had been there that night would hear those songs played for the last time. It was somewhat poetic and seemed to be reality so there wasn't much to dwell on. Since the show I had gotten a handful of emails from folks saying they missed the show for one reason or another and asking if we had recorded it to which I always replied a simple and definitive "no".
About a month ago it was brought to my attention that our friend Larry Rice (formally of the super Boston band The Mellon Farmers) had in fact recorded the set on some kind of hand held device. He got it to Dennis who got it to David at Bluetone Studio and Dave gave the recording some love. Its a wild document of the evening, picking up when Larry walks in the door, as he says hello to friends and moves about the room. Not unlike the Velvets Live at Max's Kansas City album, the recording picks up conversations and people singing along and captures the mise en scene of the night. I'm forever thankful to Larry's quick thinking.
We had plans to give people a listen around the year anniversary of the show, but with the news of Great Scott closing it seemed timely and the only logical tribute from us to a club that we adored and whose staff was always good to us and made us feel included in the scene. We're going to miss that place.
I dont know what people will get out of this recording. Maybe people who were there will enjoy reliving the evening through it. Maybe it will give people who weren't there a laugh at times when our musicianship wasn't the strongest, of which there are a few moments. But its a fair representation of the band, a band I'm immensely proud of being a part of. Maybe in this period of lock down people will listen and think about an evening when we were all together sharing an experience and they'll look forward, hopeful for the time when we are able to do it again. I dont know. I see it as a document compressing what was one of the most important aspects of my life for the last two decades into 90 minutes and that's now over.
From the bottom of my black heart I want to thank all the people who came out and supported The Beatings. I love you and you are appreciated. Give this a listen... maybe you'll get a kick out of it, maybe you won't... I did.
This towns got the weight on its shoulders, oh honey this town has got it all.
Welcome to the country. RIP Great Scott
With enteral gratitude,
