DETROIT: Effective immediately, NDS will provide representation at no cost to Wayne County residents who believe they are going to be arrested or who have just been arrested. Call us at 313-474-3200.
“Juneteenth is meant to be a celebration of freedom, but too many of our neighbors are not free. This year in particular, Juneteenth is a call to action,” said Chantá Parker, Managing Director of NDS Detroit. “Black liberation is hampered by a racist criminal legal system that our team at NDS fights against every day. By launching Community Intake today, we recognize the need for a new tool to continue this work and serve the Black community of Detroit.” #BlackLivesMatter #Juneteenth
It was great to see some of the public defenders from Neighborhood Defender Service of Detroit on the streets for their clients. We support NDS!

I thought about it today when I saw this article about averting our eyes to avoid looking at homeless people on the subways.

This sounds awesome! And we love UnionDocs and Meerkat Media Collective!
Go beyond the “talking head”! Join UnionDocs and Meerkat Media Collective member Sarah Friedland for Art of the Interview, a three-day intensive that unpacks the interview as one of the most effective and common tools in the documentary toolkit. We’ll go beyond the unimaginative ways interview is often employed and share tips for getting material that can drive emotion and a complex narrative forward.
Discussion will cover approaching traumatic material with subjects sensitively and ethically, prioritizing active listening in the moment as an interviewer, techniques for working with contentious or volatile subjects, and best practices for conducting interviews with subjects with whom you are intimate like family and friends. Sarah Friedland (Here After) will be joined by guest filmmakers, journalists and oral historians: Steve Maing (Crime & Punishment), Ursula Liang (9-Man), Linda Villarosa (NYTimes Contributing Writer), Sylvia Ryerson and Luis Luna (Melting ICE), and Nyssa Chow (Oral historian).
Through seminars and work-in-progress critiques, participants will each, in their own way, push the boundaries of the interview, and learn how to put this new knowledge into practice.

Join UnionDocs for Voices Carry: Creative Sound Recording! From July 26-28, explore strategies for using vocals – broadly defined – as a material in sound-based creative work. Traditionally, voice has a special relationship to emotion, instinct, and memory, both individual and collective. Tapping into an ancient area of our brain, sound provides immediate information telling us where we are if it is safe, and how we should feel about that.
Led by producer Latham Zearfoss, this seminar brings together D’Angelo Madsen Minax (Kairos Dirt, The Eddies), James N. Kienitz Wilkins (Public Hearing, The Plagiarists), Farihah Zaman (Remote Area Medical, Kombit), and Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich (Black Composers Trilogy, It was a Race Riot) to share their own use of voice and vocals in their practice.
