🌕🔴 A rare celestial spectacle is coming! On August 27–28, 2026, the Full Moon will pass deep into Earth’s shadow, creating a dramatic partial lunar eclipse.

At the peak of the eclipse, about 96% of the Moon’s disk will be inside Earth’s darkest shadow (the umbra), making this an exceptionally deep partial eclipse. The portion of the Moon inside the shadow can take on a striking copper-red or reddish-orange color as sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere.

The eclipse will unfold over several hours. The penumbral phase begins at 01:24 UTC on August 28, the partial phase begins around 02:34 UTC, and maximum eclipse occurs around 04:13 UTC. The event will be visible across much of the Americas, Europe, Africa and parts of the Pacific/Western Asia, depending on local moonrise and moonset.

Earth has been leaving tiny pieces of itself on the Moon for billions of years.

It may sound unbelievable, but scientists have discovered that Earth's atmosphere doesn't simply stop at our planet's surface. The constant stream of charged particles from the Sun, known as the solar wind, interacts with Earth's upper atmosphere and knocks hydrogen and oxygen ions into space.

Many of these particles become trapped within Earth's magnetotail, a massive extension of our planet's magnetic field that stretches far beyond Earth and deep into space.
