Clan of Ham

Clan of Ham Follow the Cunningham Clan as they grow, learn, and create a life they love on the road. We are giving up a 3,000+ square foot home for a camper.

Once upon a time, an obsessively organized, red-headed writer fell in love with a good old boy with a passion for agriculture. It was a whirlwind fairy tale romance, they met on Myspace (talk about dating us) the beginning of November, met in person Thanksgiving weekend, got engaged their third time to be together on New Year's Eve, and married the following July in 2007. Unlike most fairy tales

it didn't end happily ever after with the happy couple riding off into the sunset, but what followed was a series of ups and downs. Throughout our now 17 years of marriage we have seen hardship and pleasure, like any other family, but the connection through Church that brought us together has sustained us. We have lived in 13 homes, lost our job 7 times and worked countless temporary positions in between, often scraping the bottom of the barrel for flour and the cruise of oil in making ends meet. However, we've also been blessed with a strong marriage, 7 children (one of which is in Heaven today), a dependable extended family, and loving Church home. It has been truly a well lived life, but now we are taking a big new step. Our family has decided that while we love many of the aspects of a traditional life, it's time for something new. A conventional life with a home and a settled job has had some draw backs. We have a big home full of love and excitement, the satisfaction of seeing newly planted fields, and familiar patterns. And yet, we've also had to move countless times, struggle with a feeling of merely being temporary nomads, and be tied down with a demanding work schedule that has often required the husband to work from before day light to far past dusk with no appreciation for his labor. And so, we are taking this crazy show of ours on the road.

Our family is making the jump from the typical to the unconventional, and inviting you to ride along with us. We are giving up the search for a typical and settled job, to work remotely. We are going to horde memories instead of stuff. We are going to pursue adventure on this new path. We are a homeschooling family of 8 taking a leap of faith trusting in God that this is the next step of our journey. We'll share our ups and downs as a large family, experiences on the road, tips and tricks to successful homeschooling, and the way we create a life we love, all while pursuing the abundant life. Come and join us as we make our own happily ever after.

While we were were traveling to Vero Beach for a Church meeting, we decided to leave a little early and swing by Sebastian Inlet State Park. At the park itself we watched as the tide washed out pulling the water from the lagoon, and checking out the Fishing Museum and learning about the importance of the fishing trade in the area. Then before spending time on the beach we went over to the McLarty Treasure Museum to learn more about the Plate Fleet and the shipwreck of 1715.

Just a little over a month ago, in a Florida that entirely skipped from winter to summer, we traveled to Lake Louisa State Park. In addition to many trails, one of which we hiked, there is a beach on the lake with a roped off area for swimmers. It was beautiful and Ruth asked if we could go back every Friday for the rest of the summer. There were also lots of great camping options, so we will very likely be planning a camping trip there in the fall.

It has been brought to my attention that some of the links to the website aren't working. Unfortunately part of the blog is down because we don't have the cash flow at the moment to pay for regular hosting. In the meantime, I have edited all of May's post with a second link that should be working. Hopefully we will be able to rectify the situation soon. In the meantime use the following address to reach the blog. And if you see this please comment so hopefully it will show up in everyone's feed.

Good Friday when my nephew was out of school, I took him and our 6 to The Gamble Plantation Historic State Park and Judah P. Benjamin Confederate Memorial. We explored the grounds and toured the house, where we learned a great deal about the Gamble Family, the Plantations use during the war as a spot for blockade runners, and about the process of milling sugar cane in the mid 1800s.

During the second week in April we decided to take a family camping trip, for some much needed family time after our big move. We went to Payne's Prairie Preserve State Park Wednesday through Friday, and were able to see bison and Spanish mustangs. It was a great trip together.

For our final co-op field trip for this year we visited the IMAG Museum in Fort Myers. IT is a science and history museum, but they really outshine the rest of the Museums we've seen in the science department. It is definitely worth the two hour drive, but plan to spend the entire day if you go!

While we were in Fort Myers for a Church meeting in March, we made a small detour by Lake Regional Park. It definitely a little hidden gem in the Fort Myers area, that you should check out if you happen to be in the area. With walking paths, bicycle rentals and kayak rentals, there is something for everyone.

Today, we visited the Fort King Festival. Located in Ocala, it commemorates the Seminole Wars and that period of Florida history. While there, we were able to learn more about the Seminole people, craftsmanship, and way of life. We also learned more about American settlers. Britt found a new blacksmith mentor, and he will be practicing with him at monthly events. Great day.
