SCALLOP SEASON TEMPORARILY CLOSED: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced a temporary closure of recreational bay scallop harvesting in the Pasco Zone after routine testing detected elevated levels of Pyrodinium bahamense.

The closure, announced Thursday, Aug. 6, affects all state waters south of the Hernando-Pasco county line and north of the Anclote Key Lighthouse in northern Pinellas County, including the Anclote River.

According to the FWC, the agency conducts proactive monitoring to help protect residents and visitors. The temporary closure was issued after Pyrodinium bahamense was detected at levels exceeding the safety thresholds established by the National Shellfish Sanitation Program.

Recreational bay scallop harvesting is suspended in the affected area until testing confirms that levels have returned to safe limits. The FWC said the Pasco Zone will reopen once water quality meets established safety standards.

The closure only applies to recreational scallop harvesting. Other activities, including fishing, boating, and swimming, remain open and are not affected.
