LOS ANGELES, California โ€” The Highland Park community is mourning the death of 17-year-old Xavier Nungaray, a senior at Benjamin Franklin High School, who died Wednesday, September 30, after falling from the fourth floor of the school.

According to videos circulating online and accounts from students, a confrontation took place inside a classroom shortly before the fall. The footage appears to show a teacher attempting to intervene as another student strikes Xavier. He then leaves the classroom and moments later goes over a fourth-floor railing.

Xavier was rushed to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have said there is currently no evidence indicating that Xavier was intentionally pushed or that his death was a homicide. Some students, however, have reportedly questioned what happened immediately before his fall.

His family says there is another important part of the story: Xavier had reportedly experienced bullying for years. His stepmother said he was afraid to report it because he feared he could be the one punished. Relatives also said the bullying had become so serious that Xavier had considered transferring to another school.

Friends and classmates remember him as a kind, funny teenager who loved to laugh and be there for others.

Following his death, members of the community gathered outside the school, leaving flowers, candles and photographs in his memory.

As investigators work to determine exactly what happened, Xavierโ€™s family says his history of bullying should not be overlooked.

His story has also raised difficult questions about how schools and families can recognize when a student is suffering in silence.

The investigation remains ongoing.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas โ€” A 17-year-old Brownsville girl is facing a Class A misdemeanor charge after police allege she hid her 16-year-old boyfriend at her home after he was reported as a runaway.

According to Brownsville police, Mikayla Renee Medina, 17, is charged with harboring a runaway child.

Police said the teenager was staying at Medinaโ€™s residence, but investigators have not determined how many days he remained there.
