Celebrate Juneteenth through the sounds of jazz, culture, and history.

On Friday, June 19, the Historic Ritz Theatre will host the Sounds of Freedom Juneteenth Celebration featuring the Phil Morrison–Ken Trimmins Jazz Collective.

Phil Morrison is a bassist, composer, bandleader, and educator whose musical career has spanned more than six decades. Known for blending jazz with influences from around the world, Morrison has performed internationally and has long used music as a way to bring people together across cultures.

Joining him is Dr. Ken Trimmins, an internationally recognized trumpeter, educator, and Professor of Music at Albany State University. In addition to performing around the world, he directs Albany State University’s Jazz Band and has dedicated much of his career to music education and preserving the legacy of jazz.

This special concert celebrates the spirit of Juneteenth while highlighting the power of creativity, community, and freedom through music.

The Sounds of Freedom concert is one of several events taking place throughout the Golden Isles in celebration of Juneteenth. For a full list of events, participating organizations, and community partners, be sure to scan the Golden Isles Juneteenth QR code on the flyer.

The 2026 Taste of Gullah hosted by the St. Simons African American Heritage Coalition returns on June 19th from 5 PM to 7 PM at Village Creek Landing.

This annual gathering celebrates the foodways, traditions, and cultural practices carried forward by generations of Gullah Geechee people, descendants of enslaved West Africans brought to the Southeastern U.S. coast to labor on rice, indigo, and cotton plantations. From recipes to storytelling, these traditions remain deeply rooted in the history and identity of the coast.

Some reunions don’t come with celebration.

They come with memory. With longing. With love that didn’t get enough time.

Today, a group of friends found their way into the shop, reunited by grief and held together by the shared love of someone they lost. They spoke her name, her dreams, her vision.

She wanted more for Brunswick. More culture. More spaces like this.

And then they moved through the shop… gently, intentionally.

They picked up journals from Black-Owned Brunswick stories waiting to be written and she loved to write.

Seasonings from DDG's Down Right Spicy LLC. flavor, warmth, something to carry home.

Sweets from Newcastle Bakery because even in grief, there’s room for softness.

It didn’t feel like shopping.
It felt like honoring her and her hometown.

This place will always hold space for that 🥹for the ones we carry,
and the dreams that still deserve to live. 💕

As April comes to a close, the work tied to Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month continues in Brunswick through Nurturing Excellence, founded by Courtney Lucas. Their focus has been on raising awareness, supporting survivors, and providing education and prevention resources for youth and families.

As part of this effort, the community is invited to take part in Denim Day on April 29th by wearing denim in solidarity with survivors around the world. Locally, that support is also showing up through a community awareness campaign, with individuals wearing blue shirts that read “Love Doesn’t Equal Abuse” and “Your Voice Matters” as a visible show of unity.

The organization is also hosting Denim & Discussions at the Elizabeth Correll Teen Center on Wednesday, April 29th from 4:30 PM to 6 PM. This gathering is for youth who attend the center, with parents encouraged to support their participation and engagement in the conversation. Nurturing Excellence has invited the Brunswick Police Department and the Safe Harbor Children’s Advocacy Center / Connie Smith R**e Crisis Center to help bring awareness to these issues and create a safe space to learn about consent, boundaries, and prevention. It is funded by the local International Longshoremen Association, who partners with the organization as a sponsor.

In addition to these initiatives, they continue to offer ongoing support services, including survivor support groups for individuals impacted by childhood sexual abuse, held twice a month.

For those who want to support this work, you can wear denim on April 29th, share this message, have a young person in your life attend, or contribute to help sustain these programs locally.
