From NBC News and WCME

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer says he met today with Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner in Washington, and also says, "we're going to beat Susan Collins and take back the Senate."

This on the heels of the Platner campaign grappling with the fallout from reports that he exchanged sexually explicit texts with women other than his wife.

Schumer, who initially supported Governor Mills for the senate seat, has now endorsed Platner.

Pressed several times about whether revelations about Platner's personal life are compromising Democrats’ chances to defeat Collins, Schumer repeated the line: “We’re going to beat Susan Collins and take back the Senate.”

In Bath, an investigation is underway into a fire today in which a large American flag burned on the front of the Masonic Temple on Washington Street.

Firefighters say the flag had already burned by the time they arrived, and they are not certain when the flag actually burned. There was also minor damage to the building.

Investigators say a smaller American flag had been tied to the porch railing of the Temple with zip ties. However, there is no word on how that smaller flag was put there.

Several polls have shown Dr. Nirav Shah to be the candidate to beat in next week's Democratic primary race for governor, and at a news conference today on the town mall in Brunswick, Shah again said that he believes those polls.

And he may have demonstrated that belief by focusing some critical remarks not on his fellow Democrats, but rather on the opposing party--saying that Republican candidates for governor are proposing large tax cuts without saying where they would cut state services.

Dr. Shah first of all talked about Bobby Charles, widely believed to be the Republican frontrunner--noting that Charles has proposed the elimination of the state income tax. Shah notes that eliminating the income tax would cut the state's general revenue roughly in half--a move that Shah says would destroy our already struggling schools, MaineCare, nursing homes and more.

In addition to zeroing out the state income tax, Charles wants to eliminate state taxes on tips and overtime pay.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders says there is no let-up in his support for Graham Platner in Maine's U-S Senate race in the aftermath of the revelation that Platner exchanged sexually explicit text messages with several women while being married.

Sanders says, “people can’t afford healthcare. Can’t afford groceries. Can’t afford to put gas in their cars. And I think it might be a good idea if we focused on the important issues facing the working families of Maine and this country."

Platner hopes to deny Republican Senator Susan Collins a sixth term in November.

In Lincoln County, substantial concern among residents about the potential closure of the labor and delivery unit at MaineHealth's Miles Hosppital campus in Damariscotta.

MaineHealth says the unit has found it difficult to staff full-time positions since 2020 and often relies on doctors rotating in and out. MaineHealth also says there has been a decrease in overall deliveries, although some local residents are disputing that claim.

Brunswick town councilors have begun a process that may lead to a new ordinance setting an affordability threshold for rent increases at mobile home parks, establishing a rent review process, and outlining maintenance standardss to protect tenant health and safety. This ordinance was developed with input from landlords, tenants and the public.

The council has voted to set up a public hearing on the issue, to be held in two weeks.

Councilors have also approved a 180-day moratorium on certain data centers in response to growing concern about the impact of large data centers on local communities.

An intriguing remark from Governor Mills, who is reminding voters that her name is still on the ballot in the Democratic primary for the U-S Senate, which will be decided in about a week on June 9, and tells the Portland Press Herald that she didn't drop out of the race but simply suspended active campaigning.

The statement comes as the presumptive nominee, Graham Platner, has come under renewed scrutiny for sexting several women after his marriage and for some controversial online comments.

Platner became the presumptive Democratic nominee to take on Republican Senator Susan Collins after Mills suspended her campaign in late April, citing a lack of money.

A poll released last week by the University New Hampshire had Mills registering at 10 percent support. The survey was conducted nearly a month after she suspended her campaign.

WCME News -- Your 24/7 Midcoast Breaking News Leader

Graham Platner is now responding to the story in the Wall Street Journal about sexually explicit text messages which he sent to several women, calling the story "journalistic malpractice."

Platner was answering questions after a campaign event hosted by the Maine People's Alliance in Portland and accused the media of running "gossip" instead of covering his policy positions.

Platner, standing with his wife Amy Gertner, said he has a very loving and very happy marriage and suggested that the media would "very much like to try to rip that apart. They're going to come after us in every awful way that they possibly can, and we're just going to keep talking about the fact that the hospitals are closing, the fact that child care facilities are closing, the fact that teachers and nurses aren't paid enough and the fact that everybody down here continues to work harder and longer and get less."

Platner's comments come after the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times reported that Gertner had mentioned the text messages to Genevieve McDonald, the former political director for his campaign. Gertner, according to McDonald, viewed the text messages as a potential political liability.

Breaking from WCME News

The Wall Street Journal reports today that prior to entering the U.S. Senate race last year, Graham Platner’s wife worried that sexually explicit texts between him and several other women exchanged during their marriage would be a problem for the campaign.

The Journal says Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, told a campaign aide about the messages before a Labor Day rally with Senator Bernie Sanders. The name of the campaign aide is not disclosed.

The New York Times reports that Gertner had confided in Genevieve McDonald, Platner’s former political director who resigned in October after Platner came under fire for comments he made on Reddit several years ago.

Meanwhile, the Journal also reports that a campaign official says the couple decided that the text messages were a private matter and continued the campaign.

Platner became the presumptive Democratic nominee for the Senate seat after Governor Mills left the race last month, though he still faces a challenge from the lesser known David Costello of Brunswick.

The text messages are the latest in a rash of negative information about Platner since the launch of his campaign in August.
