We now have Tropical Storm Imelda with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. The center of the storm is over the western Bahamas, moving north at 7 mph. The forecast models continue to agree that Imelda will continue north, then make a sharp turn to the east, away from the U.S., around Tuesday morning. Gradual strengthening is expected during this period as well.
While the bulk of this storm will remain several hundred miles from Coastal Georgia, there is a high rip current risk through Wednesday evening. Gusty winds will continue to pick up today through Tuesday evening. Peak wind gusts could exceed 35 mph along the coastline and gusts in excess of 25 mph are likely well inland as well. Total rainfall along the immediate coastline is expected to be around 3 inches, with total precipitation dropping off rapidly inland.
