On the next World Cafe, he talks about drawing from his own family’s difficult past--his mother left Vietnam in 1968 after his grandfath...

Rudder High School Varsity Head Coach John Shelton Reflects on 34 Years

Rudder High School Varsity Head Coach John Shelton Reflects on 34 Years

Bryan ISD Rudder High School Girls Basketball Coach Jim Sheldon started playing Basketball at the age of six and knew in Junior High School in McKinney that he wanted to coach. He started the Rudder High School Girls basketball program as a Freshman team the year the school opened. Originally planning to coach Boys he was the last person hired at Princeton High School (outside of McKinney) and the only thing they had left was Girls Basketball. He took it, and he rest is history. He counts his Mom as one of his biggest inspirations. She played Basketball at Tennessee and encouraged John and his two brothers to be athletes. He’s taken his teams to State three times and even brought home a Championship. He says that the secret to his success is instilling belief in everyone from the players to the coaching staff and fans that the team can win, and playing a fast game that keeps the other team on the run. Averaging 72 points per game and more 3 point attempts than any other team in the nation his unique playing style and system have gained acclaim. His advice to his successor is to believe in your system, don’t let anyone convince you to change it, and keep your composure. While he’s looking forward to retirement and having time to enjoy holidays and do things that he couldn’t during his career when he was constantly preparing for the next game he has no plans to be less active. He enjoys working with the kids and wants to keep helping in any way that he can but he doesn’t want to get in the way of the next generation of coaches.

Rudder High School Varsity Assistant Coach Kallie Donley Motivates & Inspires Students

Rudder High School Varsity Assistant Coach Kallie Donley knew at an early age that she wanted to play Volleyball and her goal took her all the way to Rutgers University where she played on the Women’s Volleyball team. After graduating she returned to the Brazos Valley and has taught in the Navasota ISD and Bryan ISD. In Bryan she has taught fifth grade science and now serves as a Varsity Assistant Coach, English co-teacher and yearbook sponsor at Rudder High School. Outside of school she coaches the 8th grade Brazos Valley Juniors Volleyball team. A lifelong athlete Kallie counts her Mom Jacky Pence, who coincidentally is Varsity Head Coach at Rudder High School, as the most influential motivator in her life. Leading by example she teaches her student athletes life lessons off the court as well as on.

Part of that involves service to the community and recent examples include providing help to North Bryan New Birth Baptist Church after frozen pipes burst and flooded the church, and improving the appearance of KEOS Community Radio by landscaping, tree trimming and painting during Spring Break. Bryan ISD student athletes are leading by example, putting into practice what they have learned from their coach.

Rudder High School Sophomore Student Athlete Neely Rutledge is a native Bryanite and active with the Rudder Girls Varsity Volleyball team and FFA. Her athletic pursuits started with Church League at Central Church in the third grade and continues today. Despite the challenges and changes brought about by COVID-19 restrictions she’s remained active, training at home to maintain her conditioning. She feels that being involved in athletics and FFA at Rudder have motivated her through expectations for high standards. After graduation from high school she hopes to go out of state and be involved in NCAA Division I (D-1) Volleyball and eventually pursue a career in the medical field as a NICU Nurse or Physical Therapist.

Some Changes to KEOS’s “Donate Now” Feature

Hello, KEOS Listeners! As we prepare for our Spring pledge drive that starts next Friday (3/12), I just wanted to let everyone know that when you donate at http://keos.org/ by clicking on "Donate Now," you will be donating through Process Donation rather than Network for Good. This feature is part of the donation package we get from Process Donation, and it's saving us about $60/month compared to what we've been paying for Network for Good.

You'll notice things look different, but the process is essentially the same: enter the donor and donation information, and submit. We are limited in how we can set this up, so we are unable to list program names for donors to select when they make donations. However, you can type the name of the program you support in the "Leave a Comment" section, so you can still tell us programs you like when you make a donation. We encourage you to send any feedback or comments on to us along with your donation. You also can set up monthly donations with Process Donation if you wish to do so.

One drawback: we can no longer accept donations through PayPal with this new system. However, as something new: you can now make donations from your bank account rather than a credit or debit card if you wish to do so.

If you are set up with a recurring donation in Network for Good now, no need to do anything yet. I will be emailing everyone who has a recurring donation in Network for Good to let them know about the change and how they can set up a recurring donation in Process Donation. Right now, recurring donations are still being taken care of with Network for Good, though we'll be closing that down (hopefully within the next 4-6 weeks). Recurring donors do not need to do anything until notified by email, so we're not in danger of losing your monthly donation or double-charging you as we make this transition.

If you have any questions or if anyone you know has any questions, please email me directly at [email protected].

Thanks, and thank you for supporting all-volunteer, community radio!

Sincerely,

Kris May
President, KEOS Board of Directors

Our Story

KEOS does not have a Station Manager instead, we have a Management Team where decisions are made in democratic votes, one person one vote. The Management Team is comprised of volunteers that donate time and effort to managing KEOS.

As a community radio station, KEOS depends on public support from our listeners. When you give to KEOS, your tax-deductible gift helps make possible the locally aired programs which you have come to enjoy and expect, including The Gospel Express, Sunday Blues, Oldies Warehouse with Rockin Billy, The Blue Bonnet Trail, AFTERMATH, Groovesday, Headphones Optional, Underscore in motion, High Lonesome, Listen Globally, The Late Night Raid, Retro Friday, 80's Unearthed, Iron Horse Cafe, Randon Routes, Back To Basics and many more! The majority of KEOS' budget comes from the generous support from our community. You may choose a one-time donation or a sustaining donation with monthly recurring payments by clicking the Donate Now button at the top of the page. Support YOUR Favorite Show!! Make the reason you listen, the reason you donate.

Jimmy is the founder of the KEOS Jam, an annual day-long showcase of live music in celebration of all-volunteer, community radio. Over the years, Jimmy has welcomed many musicians and singer/songwriters to the KEOS Bell Studios for live performances and conversations on the “Bluebonnet Trail.” He makes everyone feel right at home with his hospitality, kindness, and easy-going sense of humor.
