The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is dredging sand from the ocean floor near Great Egg Harbor Inlet and pumping it straight onto Ocean City, New Jersey's shoreline through a pipeline โ€” no trucks required.

As the sand comes out, crews shape it into a raised berm along the beach, effectively rebuilding a natural storm buffer from scratch. This kind of large-scale dredging is standard practice for East Coast beach towns, which lose sand every year to erosion and storms. The work started in July and should wrap up by early September, just ahead of the fall storm season.

Some of the biggest concrete beams on the Tennessee River had been sitting in storage since 2010 โ€” over a decade โ€” waiting for their turn. This year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finally put them to work.

Each 120-foot beam weighs more than 463 tons, and getting just one to the Chickamauga Lock site meant a 7-hour barge trip down the river from Watts Bar Dam. Once on site, crews used two massive derrick cranes working together to lift and lower each beam into exact position for the lock's new upstream approach wall. Why go through all this?

The new lock will move 9 barges through in a single lockage, instead of just 1 at a time โ€” a huge jump in shipping capacity for the region. Would you trust decade-old concrete for a job this heavy?

Most people think dredging is simply about removing sediment from shipping channels, but this project is doing something more useful with part of the material.

At Buffalo Harbor in New York, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is dredging about 190,000 cubic yards of sediment to keep the harbor navigable. Instead of sending every cubic yard to disposal, around 80,000 cubic yards will be placed in an abandoned shipping slip to support the creation of a new Great Lakes coastal wetland.

Before the material is reused, it is tested with environmental agencies to make sure it meets the required standards.

It is a good example of how harbor maintenance and ecosystem restoration can be combined in one engineering project.

Augustana College engineering students tested a different way to connect bridge members: custom 3D-printed joints.

For their Spring 2026 Engineering Showcase, the team built a physical stick-bridge prototype using wooden members and a custom connector node designed to join multiple structural elements at one point.

The bridge was then physically load-tested to evaluate its stability and structural performance.

Augustana reported a projected 10โ€“20 kg failure capacity for the prototype.

The project shows how 3D printing can be used to create customized structural connections that would be difficult to produce with conventional methods.

A mining truck weighing this much can now operate autonomously.

On April 21, 2026, Komatsu announced the commissioning of its 1,000th autonomous ultra-class haul truck using the companyโ€™s FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System.

The machine is a 930E-5AT, rated for a 290-metric-ton payload, and was deployed at Barrickโ€™s Nevada Gold Mines operation in the United States.

Instead of relying on a driver inside every truck, the autonomous system coordinates haulage operations and controls the vehicles around the mine site.

Komatsu says trucks using FrontRunner have collectively moved more than 11.5 billion metric tons of material since the system was commercially introduced.

Itโ€™s a major milestone for autonomous heavy equipment in large-scale mining.

Lake Michigan waves can put enormous stress on harbor structures, so engineers sometimes use massive rock as part of the defense.

In July 2026, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began structural stabilization work at the end of the Grand Haven south pierhead in Michigan. The work includes placing armor stone and reinforcing loose sheet pile around the pierhead.

The construction area is next to the historic lighthouse, so pedestrian access was temporarily restricted while the work was underway.

Armor stone acts as a protective layer that helps absorb and resist wave forces instead of leaving the underlying structure exposed to direct wave action.

The project shows how relatively simple materials like large rock can play an important role in protecting critical Great Lakes navigation infrastructure.

Instead of hauling truckloads of sand onto the beach, engineers are dredging it offshore and pumping it directly to shore through a pipeline.

At Ocean City, New Jersey, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is carrying out a major beach nourishment project using more than 1.6 million cubic yards of sand from an offshore borrow area near Great Egg Harbor Inlet. The sand is pumped onto the beach and then shaped into an elevated berm.

Construction started in July 2026 and is expected to continue into early September.

The project is designed to make the beach wider and provide more protection against coastal storms, helping reduce damage to nearby infrastructure.

Itโ€™s basically large-scale dredging being used to rebuild a beach.

At Lewisville Lake Dam in Texas, engineers are strengthening the spillway by drilling more than 70 high-capacity post-tensioned anchors through the concrete and deep into the underlying bedrock.

The anchors essentially lock the spillway to the rock below, increasing resistance against uplift and sliding when enormous water pressures act beneath the structure during floods.
