A lot has happened since my last post but the majority has been in the last two weeks. I'm exhausted and drained.
Firstly, I got Mackenzie and River safely moved from AZ to CO despite no trailer brakes, high winds, monsoons, wash outs, and objects flying off of other vehicles and sliding across the highway in front of us. They settled into their new home, a huge pasture with five other mares, despite the usual integration drama.
Then Mackenzie tore her leg open on something. It was relatively small but kind of deep on her upper foreleg. I immediately started wound care and antibiotics. The vet came to take xrays and examine the wound. He didn't think it had punctured the joint but she had developed cellulitis so we got more aggressive with the antibiotics and saw a huge improvement.
Then I got hurt. I'll go into the details later but it involved head trauma, stitches, whiplash, broken teeth, and various scrapes and bruises. I have healed a lot in the last 9 days and ultimately should be fine beyond a few scars but every day is still challenging in some way.
This morning, when I went to treat and medicate Mackenzie, she refused to walk...big, fat uh oh.
After a farm call with xrays, ultrasound, blood, fluid and tissues samples, it was determined that every sign was pointing to a joint infection in her elbow. I decided not to pull any more punches so I loaded her up and hauled to the vet clinic for arthroscopic surgery which will happen sometime tomorrow (Tuesday).
To say that I'm scared to lose her under anesthesia, during recovery if she panics while waking up, or further down the road due to complications is an understatement.
So please think of Mackenzie tomorrow and send her all of your best juju.
