Turns out it was down for maintenance and I assumed it was off for the season 🤣 ā€œsure go aheadā€ famous last words šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

Not my best parenting moment but it turned into a perfectly unplanned chaotic morning of fun šŸ’¦ isn’t that usually how it goes though?

Who doesn’t love a good cave to explore? 🧔

There is a little bit of rock scrambling involved but nothing major.

Before we dive into the details make sure to SAVE this post, share it with your travel buddy, and follow for more ✨

1. Raven Caves Trail:5 miles to the caves but you can keep going down to the creek
Free parking but very minimal (do not park on the side of the highway!)
No bathrooms

2. Birthing Cave Trail
2 miles out & back
No bathrooms
No cell service
Free parking

Make sure you have AllTrails on and your map downloaded for offline use because you will lose service. Especially for birthing cave, there are connecting trails you can easily wander off on.

Bring lots of water, more than enough. Lots of snacks, let someone know where you’re going or share your location. Pack out all of your garbage and do NOT carve into these beautiful rocks.

We make them go anyway.

And when we get there, their attitude changes. Every.single.time.

The first reason:
We want to teach them that sometimes in life it isn’t always about how you feel but what you do that matters. You work out even if you don’t feel like it in the moment. You refrain from snacks even when you really want one. Why? Because you know it benefits you long term. That’s the same thing as going outside. Sure, your flesh in the moment wants to lay on the couch and watch the screen but make yourself get up and get out and you will always be thankful you did.

The second reason: We do things that our whole family enjoys, sometimes it’s water parks and theme parks or the mall and sometimes we go on outdoor adventures. That’s how a family unit works, it’s not always about you.

There are so many life lessons that can be learned in this situation: getting uncomfortable, prioritizing outdoors, prioritizing family time, prioritizing health, and how much of a difference it actually makes in how you feel.

Do you think we’re right or wrong for doing this?

Side note: we always choose kid-friendly trails, and make them fun and bring lots of snacks. There hasn’t been a time yet where the kids didn’t end up having a good time when we forced them to go. We try to remind them of this every time šŸ˜‚like YOU KNOW it’s going to be cool why are you acting like this?
