My Brother’s Keeper – Native American Program and Seneca Nation Native Connections program gets visit from professional lacrosse player-Summer 2024

Participants of the My Brother's Keeper - Native American Program enjoyed another cool summer session at Gowanda Middle School and are poised for a positive start to the 2024-2025 academic year. The two-week program ran July 8-19, 2024, with its largest group of boys participating since the program began at GCS in 2019.
The students – all entering fifth through ninth grades – gathered for meals, cleaned up and collaborated on life skills and fitness over their 10 days together. The summer session was led by mentors Steven Clarke and Paul Twoguns III and Amy Mohawk, Intervention Math & Reading teacher and MBK-NAP grant coordinator.
The group conceptualized and completed a large, meaningful mural under the guidance of high school art teacher Heather Rydzik. The motto is “We are brothers” and the group worked on it in shifts every morning.
“I asked them ‘What else do you want to see at the school?’” says Rydzik, noting that all of the boys are very interested in lacrosse, considered the creator’s game, so that motif and a snow snake figure prominently in the piece.
They also incorporated a large orange handprint to represent the Every Child Matters movement, which pays respect to the victims of residential boarding schools. They wanted to do something for the children who never got to play the game of lacrosse.
Rydzik also had them make a wampum bead bracelet on the first day, tying into the cultural piece of the program. A lacrosse stick stringing activity led by Mentor Twoguns was a favorite group activity.
“It was definitely a big hit!” says Amy Mohawk, Intervention Math & Reading teacher and MBK-NAP grant coordinator. “It was great to see the boys using their peer tutoring skills helping one another with this challenging yet rewarding and meaningful task.
Professional lacrosse player Zed Williams, a graduate of Silver Creek Central School District and an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation who grew up on the Cattaraugus Territory, worked with the boys for a day at the Seneca Nation Native Connections program clubhouse. He is a National Lacrosse League champion with the Colorado Mammoth and Premier Lacrosse League with the Maryland Whipsnakes.
They engaged in icebreakers and a presentation on self-esteem. They had a discussion on lacrosse being a medicine game and being respectful of it, and also of wooden sticks. The talk included an overview of how using mind-changers affects spiritual and athletic performance, and a competition was created using intoxication goggles to simulate how it affects the skills of those under the influence.
Williams talked about working hard to fulfill goals and dreams and played a pick-up game, acting as the goalie.
Brennan Johns shared some of the responsibilities of being a singer in our community then sang social dance songs with the group, with a couple boys taking the lead with the drum. The day ended with swimming in the Saylor building pool.
The boys focused on life skills including cooking with health and nutrition in mind with Full Circle Nutrition (Whitney Brooks) and self-care with physical fitness routines in the weight room. A trip to Ganondagan, the Seneca historical site, provided the group with a variety of activities including screening an artist film version of the creation story and listening to Seneca history lessons while in the authentic longhouse full of artifacts. The boys enjoyed a good game of longball while there.
The group took field trips to see the movie “A Quiet Place” at the Historic Hollywood Theater in downtown Gowanda, Allegany State Park, the Seneca Nation Gakwi:yo:h Farms, and also had time to do some kayaking at Letchworth State Park.

Gowanda Elementary School wins SPARK grant for physical education!

GES is one of only 11 schools across the country to be awarded a valuable infusion of gym equipment and training for its Physical Education programs.

The products and services are granted by the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State University and provided by SPARK.

Teacher and coach David Bolen, in collaboration with student-teacher Tyler Regan from The State University of New York at Fredonia, applied for and secured a SARK Equity Award valued at more than $3,300. Bolen credits Regan for helping gather information and helping write the successful application statement in early 2024.
“In addition to helping refresh some of the well-loved equipment in constant circulation, this equipment supports a wide array of activities,” notes Bolen, who says he and his colleagues are looking forward to completing the online training portion of the grant. “All our students learn the basics of dribbling, overhead throw, passing, setting, and strengthening other skills.”

Students at GES will benefit from the award during the 2024-2025 academic year. Along with the SPARK Inclusive PE Guidebook and curriculum materials that align with national standards, GES received cones with cone displays, poly-spots, bean bags, foam balls, and a 24-foot parachute. The full value of the SPARK Equity Individual Award is $3,304.23.

Bolen is eager to incorporate the new equipment into daily lessons. He says it will be used to help students with coordination, team-building, cooperative activities, direction-following while also serving as building blocks for sports involvement. In addition to the equipment, GES also receives SPARK K-2 PE Set 3 Curriculum and an inclusive guidebook (both in digital and print) as well as 16 credits of SPARKecademy online training.

Mark your calendars! Gowanda Central School District Music Department production of Guys & Dolls Jr. will be held March 20/21.

The talented students of Gowanda Middle School have been rehearsing for weeks ahead of its production of “Guys and Dolls Jr.” in the district auditorium. Both performances of this family friendly on musical are open to the public on Wednesday and Thursday, March 20-21, 2024, at 7 p.m. ‘

Set in New York City, “Guys and Dolls Jr.” follows the adventures of Nathan Detroit as he attempts to collect enough money to set up the crap game of the year, all the while dodging the authorities. Concurrently, his longtime fiance and nightclub performer, Adelade, expresses her sorrow about Nathan not marrying her after being together for 14 years. Nathan singles out high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson for the funds but Sky is busy chasing the moralistic and proper missionary Sarah Brown.

Preparations for this year’s musical are in full swing at Gowanda GMS. Volunteers and students are busy making costumes and props as well. The music room, classrooms, auditorium and hallways have also been alive with lines, lyrics and choreography these past few weeks in preparation for the upcoming show.

“When choosing a show each year, I always look for one that will best feature the outstanding talent we have here, as well as give our students a well-rounded theater education. Following the success of “SpongeBob The Musical: Youth Edition” last year, I knew it was time to honor a classic, “golden age” musical. To appreciate the modern-day musical, we must take time to perform these types of shows, for if they never were created, we wouldn’t have the musicals we have today,” says music teacher and musical director/producer Mr. Adam Bett.
“Guys and Dolls Jr.” is a timeless classic, thought of by many as the perfect musical comedy. Running for over 1,200 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1950, “Guys and Dolls” entertained the masses. Paying homage to the original, “Guys and Dolls Jr.” is sure to please viewers of all ages with catchy and memorable songs such as “Luck be a Lady”, “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat” and “If I Were a Bell”. Endearing characters, witty dialogue and vivid costuming will keep all in attendance engaged and waiting in anticipation of each scene to come.

“At its core, the show celebrates the timeless story that reminds us that even the most unlikely pairings can find happiness when they open their hearts. As audiences leave the theater, I hope they carry with them the message that love knows no bounds and that redemption is always within reach for those willing to take a chance,” says Mr. Bett.
The middle school performers are excited to share the happiness and joy that is sure to come with this musical to families and community members.

“The energy level of our students for this vintage musical has been out of this world,” says GMS Principal Todd Miklas. “For those involved, each student and staff member have dedicated countless hours to make sure they put forth their best performance. It is great seeing their smiles and enthusiasm as they head into practice each and every day. Truly, the key here, from my perspective, is Mr. Bett and how he hypes the production, launches, organizes, communicates all the particulars, and directs countless moving components from within the production to external, in simply making things come together; absolutely amazing work by this passionate educator!”
