🎥 VOICES OF THE VILLAGE — Meet Kevin Barrett! 🙌🏾

Fresh off our first Volunteer Orientation, we caught up with one of our newest volunteers and what he had to say gave us ALL the chills! ❤️🟨💚

Kevin Barrett is a Baltimore native who now calls Western New York home, and he came to Orientation with a message that hits deep:

"A lot of times people speak of it in past tense, what Juneteenth used to be. But currently, Juneteenth is really kicking. There's a lot of young people coming out and it's impacting our community in a positive way. And if I can do anything to contribute to that just to keep the vibe going, that's what I want to do." 💛

THAT is the spirit of Juneteenth of Buffalo. That is WHY we do this. 🔥

Kevin, thank you for showing up, for seeing the vision, and for choosing to pour into this community. Welcome to the family! 🫶🏾🟥🟨🟩

🎥 VOICES OF THE VILLAGE — Meet Monica Vann & Ms. Simmons! 🙌🏾

Fresh off our first Volunteer Orientation, we sat down with two incredible women whose reasons for showing up will move your soul. 💛❤️💚

Meet Monica Vann. Monica lost her mother the same week as the horrific Tops Massacre — and her mother was a devoted Juneteenth volunteer who never missed a celebration. Monica showed up to Orientation with one mission:

"She passed the torch and I'm here to carry it." 🕯️
There are no words. Just gratitude. Thank you Monica. 🫶🏾

And then there's Ms. Simmons, a Buffalo original who's been coming to Juneteenth since the days when the festival was held on Jefferson Ave! 🙌🏾

"This year I said, let me volunteer. I just wanna get everybody hyped up and excited about the parade. We love our community. We want to celebrate our community just like others do. So we're here." 🔥

Two different stories. One shared love for this community and this celebration. THAT is what Juneteenth of Buffalo is all about. 🟥🟨🟩

To Monica, Ms. Simmons, and every single person who came out to Orientation #1 — THANK YOU. You are the heartbeat of this festival and we are honored to have you on the team! 💪🏾

Juneteenth Festival Inc. proudly hosts THE LIBERATION FLAG RAISING CEREMONY — the kickoff to Sankofa Days for the 50th Anniversary of The Juneteenth of Buffalo Festival!

This is our annual flag raising to commemorate the beginning of Juneteenth — a powerful, inspiring moment of unity, remembrance, and pride. We begin with comments from Juneteenth Festival Inc. Board Members, committee members, and City, County & State Leadership, followed by the raising of the Liberation Flag.

Video 4 of our Volunteer Interview Series is here and this one brought the WHOLE family! 👨‍👧🔥

LaShawn Chinn showed up to sign up as a volunteer for the 50th Anniversary of the Juneteenth of Buffalo Festival and she didn't come alone, she brought her young teen Zion right along with her! Because that's exactly what this is about. Passing it down. 💛❤️💚

Lashawn said it perfectly:

"It's going to be bigger and better than ever. It's like a big family reunion right here in Buffalo!" 🎉

And she made sure to highlight everything that makes this festival truly for EVERYONE:

Celebrated by African Americans Only? What's your take on that? - from the Juneteenth of Buffalo Podcast.

JayVon Palmer (JaySituated) spoke abou scrolling on and saw the Juneteenth of Buffalo Festival account and noticed the post feauturing Betty Jean Grant talking about African Attire, and about others getting more involved.

He stated, there were individuals saying Juneteenth is a holiday that should specifically be celebrated by African Americans only.

"Growing up, I always saw a combination of all Black cultures — Caribbean, African, all across the diaspora."

"Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."

Before there was a Juneteenth celebration. Before there was a proclamation. Before a single soldier carried the news to Galveston, Texas on June 19th, 1865 — there was a man who refused to let freedom remain a distant dream.

Frederick Douglass — abolitionist, orator, statesman, and one of the most important voices in American history — spent his entire life demanding what our people were owed. Born into slavery, he escaped, educated himself, and used the power of his words to shake the conscience of a nation.

His famous speech, "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" (1852) remains one of the most searing indictments of American hypocrisy ever delivered. But Douglass never stopped. He pressed Abraham Lincoln. He fought for the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. He lived to see the promise of emancipation — and continued to demand that America live up to it.

This is why Juneteenth matters.

The freedom announced on June 19th, 1865 was not given — it was fought for, demanded, and paid for in blood, sacrifice, and the relentless voices of people like Frederick Douglass.

As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Juneteenth of Buffalo Festival, we honor Face #3 not just as a figure in a history book — but as a reminder that the demand for true freedom is still alive. Still necessary. Still ours to carry forward.
