Scorching temperatures in July sent people looking for places to cool off and the Town of Tonawanda offered myriad indoor and outdoor options for people to beat the heat. There is still plenty of summer left, so if you are looking for a respite on steamy days, indoor cooling center locations include the Town of Tonawanda Senior Citizen Center, Kenmore Library, Kenilworth Library, and the Aquatic & Fitness Center.
We also have several outdoor pools and splash pads that people have been flocking to, including Lincoln Pool, Kenmore Pool, the Sheridan Parkside Spray Park, and splash pads at Curtis, Ellwood, Kenilworth, and Thurston parks. Note that patrons of town pools must have a valid pass to enter the pool area. Outdoor pools are accessible to residents of the town and the Village of Kenmore.
If you are looking for cool centers outside the town and village, visit https://www3.erie.gov/health/stay-cool.
We need to take the hot weather serious. According to the Erie County Department of Health, “Hot weather can lead to heat-related deaths and illnesses – conditions that are preventable. Hundreds of people in the United States die because of extreme heat conditions every year. Know the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness and learn how to protect yourself and those around you from extreme heat.”
And it comes as no surprise that the newly-opened Paddock Chevrolet Spray Park has been a huge hit with users. The spray park opened on May 27, 2025. Since then, it has attracted 18,519 visits with 10,084 filling the spray park in July alone.
People are noticing what we are doing with our recreation facilities. Buffalo Business First has named Paddock Chevrolet Spray Park the winner of its “Brick by Brick” award in the Community Services category. “The Town of Tonawanda demolished a 60-year-old ice rink and pool in the former Brighton Park, and it replaced it with a new ice rink, spray park, pickleball courts, rugby pitch, and picnic grove in a $24 million project,” Business First wrote. “The goal was to not only improve amenities for Town of Tonawanda residents, but to create a space that would attract more people to the town – it’s open to
all.”
It is gratifying to see that kind of regional recognition. No doubt this was a huge lift with countless people, organizations, and companies contributing to the success of the spray park. Everyone should be proud of what we have done to improve the quality of life in the Town of Tonawanda.
I am grateful to everyone who is staffing the cooling centers and all the Youth, Parks and Recreation workers who keep all of our facilities operating. I know it is not easy to be outside in sunny, warm, and humid conditions. That gratitude is extended to all of our Town of Tonawanda employees who now, more than ever, are making our town a great place to live, work, and play.
Training camp for the Buffalo Bills is well underway with the preseason opener in Orchard Park on Saturday, Aug. 9, against the New York Giants, which the Bills lost, 34-25. This promises to be a special season, the curtain call for Highmark Stadium. Games for keeps begin Monday, Sept. 7, against the Baltimore Ravens. Let’s hope this is the most memorable season in team history. Go Bills!
