Congratulations to our founders Ogechukwukamma Kalu and Jennifer Elliott for being selected as Remap-IPV cohort scholars and attending the REMAP - IPV in-person training last week.

They had the privilege of joining scholars from across the country for the Restoring equity to measuring and preventing perinatal intimate partner violence (Remap-IPV), supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

As founders of BBRIDGE, we are committed to elevating culturally rooted, trauma-informed, and community-led approaches to understanding and preventing perinatal intimate partner violence.
Grateful for the connections, shared vision, and continued collaboration ahead.

1. Emotional and Psychological Distress

Children exposed to IPV often experience anxiety, depression, fear, guilt, and confusion. They may internalize the conflict and blame themselves for the violence.

2. Behavioral Challenges

Exposure can lead to aggression, withdrawal, defiance, or difficulties in school and peer relationships as children try to cope with chaotic home environments.

3. Cognitive and Academic Impacts

Stress and trauma can disrupt brain development, concentration, and memory, leading to poor academic performance or developmental delays.

4. Health and Physical Effects

Children may experience sleep disturbances, headaches, stomachaches, and other somatic symptoms related to chronic stress or trauma.

5. Intergenerational Transmission of Violence

Without intervention, children who witness IPV may normalize unhealthy relationships or repeat patterns of abuse in adulthood, either as victims or perpetrators.

Children deserve safe, nurturing environments where love replaces fear.
By supporting survivors and addressing IPV, we protect future generations.

This year’s theme, “With Survivors,” emphasizes partnership, walking alongside survivors to provide safety, support, and solidarity.

It is both a message of affection and affirmation to survivors, and a call to action for advocates, allies, and communities everywhere: we must stand with survivors to create lasting change.

October is a month of many important observances. It is recognized nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and Depression Awareness Month, and it also brings attention to Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness, Breast Cancer Awareness, Bullying Prevention, and Disability Employment Awareness, among others. Each of these themes highlights issues that deeply impact individuals, families, and communities.

At BBRIDGE, our mission is to create awareness, foster dialogue, and translate research into practice, especially around domestic violence (DV).

Throughout October, we will be sharing information, resources, and reflections that connect DV awareness with broader issues of mental health, grief, resilience, and community healing.

In doing so, we will also draw inferences from many of the conversations featured in our first podcast series (12 episodes), bringing back insights from our guests and connecting them to the month’s themes. This allows us not only to raise awareness but also to amplify survivor voices, highlight culturally responsive solutions, and encourage community-driven responses to violence and trauma.

It’s a Purple month 💜
