Buffalo’s thriving cultural scene is perhaps the city’s best-kept secret, and the University at Buffalo (https://www.buffalo.edu/), specifically the Department of Music (https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/music/events/concert-calendar.html), offers an incredible wealth of performances during the academic year and beyond.

Asked what makes Buffalo—and UB in particular—such a special place for musicians and music lovers, pianist and UB Professor and Music Department Chair Eric Huebner (https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/music/about/leadership-administration.host.html/content/shared/arts-sciences/music/new-faculty-profiles/huebner-eric.html) pointed to the university’s deep historical roots and the city’s enduring commitment to the arts. “It really goes to the unique history here,” Huebner explained. “There was a founder of this music department [Cameron Baird], and early supporters of the university itself back in the 1930s who really valued classical music—really valued the work of living composers—and made a point of bringing them here.” Early Buffalo industrialists, he noted, were intent on building “a new cultural capital to rival Chicago and New York,” investing in the arts and drawing creative talent to the city from its earliest days. That vision left a lasting mark. “Some of these people, like Frederick and Alice Slee, left their entire fortune to this music department to endow this incredible concert series, [Slee Beethoven Quartet Series and The Slee Visiting Artist Series]” he said. “That early commitment and passion for the arts is what still really infuses everything you hear today—and it still sustains us.”

That legacy continues through UB’s current season of performances, which reflects the same spirit of innovation, collaboration, and excellence that has defined the university’s musical life for nearly a century.

After purchasing (more like rescuing) Mohawk Place in March of this year, and working tediously towards reopening the beloved music venue, I am happy to report that the music venue is now ready to “officially” reopen. Building owners Bernice Radle and Frank DiMaria and the “Mohawk Forever” team (Mike, Marty, Meredith, Stef & Tim) have secured all of the necessary permits, and now have a certificate of occupancy.

Preservation Buffalo Niagara (PBN) is in the midst of helping Centennial AME Zion Church to secure its landmark status. The church, located at 127 Doat Street – a couple of blocks from Bailey and Genesee – was constructed in 1910 and was originally built for the Jerusalem German Evangelical Reformed Church, with a mainly Gothic Revival design.

Today, the Centennial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church serves the Genesee-Moselle neighborhood.

Typically, when I see reports that say that Buffalo is excelling at this or that, I tend to be sceptical because I’m assuming that it’s some sort of clickbait. And that’s exactly what I thought when I received an email from StorageCafe that gave Buffalo a surprisingly high walkability score.
