The footage, which can be viewed at the link in comments, shows officers wrestling with the suspect, identified by BPD as 33-year-old Minhaz Siddiqui, in an attempt to handcuff him. Before they can do so, shots are fired and Officer Marc Hurst, who was hit by six of the eight shots fired by Siddiqui, falls to the ground.

Two officers return fire — BPD said officers fired three rounds — before the weapon is cleared and Siddiqui is put in handcuffs.

In a press conference Friday, BPD Commissioner Erika Shields said both Hurst and Siddiqui remain at ECMC, recovering from their injuries.

Garnell Whitfield, Jr., is the son of Ruth Whitfield, one of the 10 lives lost in the act of domestic terrorism on May 14, 2022.

He is also a member of Buffalo Together's steering committee, and he said the organization's purpose is not only to respond to the tragedy but to support solutions to deeply rooted inequities in the community, as he explains in the video below.

Part I of our "Where Did The Money Go?" investigative report focused on the $90+ million that was pledged to the victims and East Side community in the wake of the shooting.

Part II, releasing Monday at 11 a.m., will dive deeper into those who received funds -- and those who have been left on the outside looking in.

Something happened in the Erie Basin Marina on Thursday afternoon that hadn’t happened in decades. A passenger cruise ship arrived and docked.

The 130-passenger vessel American Patriot arrived five and a half hours ahead of schedule, docking along Erie Street around 3:30 p.m. It was originally expected to arrive closer to 9 p.m.

The first passengers to step ashore were Gary and Betty Studenic of Marietta, Georgia. With the ship in port until Saturday, they looked forward to seeing some of the region’s attractions.

“Niagara Falls,” said Betty. “I know there's a Frank Lloyd Wright Museum or something like that. I heard about it, yeah. I want to see that.”

Perhaps she was referring to the Darwin Martin House in Buffalo, designed by the famed American architect. A formal schedule of tour stops were planned for Friday, and both state and local tourism leaders were ready to assist and educate their visitors.

“Our new friends will be disembarking to see our Buffalo AKG museum, our historical sites, our Naval and Military Park, along with a walkthrough at the architectural legend Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House, thanks to our Visit Buffalo leadership,” said Joan Kesner, chair of the New York State agency Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation.

The American Patriot is the newest ship being utilized by the company American Cruise Lines, which offers cruises exploring the Great Lakes. This ship’s arrival in Buffalo is part of a cruise which began with a land tour of the Erie Canal in Syracuse, then shoving off at Oswego on a course which took the American Patriot toward the Thousands Islands then back west, through the Welland Canal, and then into Buffalo.

Legislators have passed an Erie County hunting law, overriding a recent veto by County Executive Mark Poloncarz.

The local law opts Erie County into a State measure passed years ago which allows big-game hunting for 12- and 13-year-olds with a mentor’s supervision.

County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo says the county is well prepared, and she’s confident in the education process for teenagers to get hunting licenses.

“The education is extensive and intensive. They don't take it lightly. It is hours and hours upon studying courses, passing the tests," she said. "I actually think it makes the county safer when we have more youth that are trained properly on how to handle fi****ms, that they're out there learning how to do these things the right way.”

Taisha St. Jean-Tarde is one of three county legislators to vote against the law. The county needs stricter requirements for safety training, she said.

“They need to learn everything and anything, have tons of hours. And most importantly, I think they should have more of a senior person with them as their mentor," St. Jean-Tarde said. "I know it's, I believe, 21 (years old). I would love to see someone more senior with them who've done it for decades.”

The excitement is building, especially in two of Canada’s major cities, as the FIFA World Cup is only a couple of weeks away.
The country will host 13 matches of the tournament, six of them in Toronto.

But for political leaders, some data might be having a dampening effect on their excitement, including a report based on recent information the cost of hosting the games will surpass $1 billion.

Four years ago, then-mayor John Tory said the games would put Toronto on the map, bringing soccer fans from around the world, along with the money they would spend.

The original cost of the games to Canada was pegged at just over $500 million. Now, the Parliamentary Budget Officer estimates the price tag will be over $1 billion.

It’s estimated that about 300,000 soccer fans will descend on the city for the tournament. Bars, restaurants, airlines and hotels will be the big winners.

"As a businessperson being down by the stadium, of course, the buzz is already there," said Wayne Cowley, owner of The Bottom Line sports bar in Toronto. "We’re already booked solid for some of the matches. Usually for the summer we’re dead, so ... for something like this to come to the city, it’s going to be crazy."

Like Cowley’s bar, hundreds of others in Toronto say they are booked up for some of the games.

But the predicted costs of those matches to the various governments run to about $82 million per game. While that number might be sobering to some, there are experts who say they aren’t surprised.

Buffalo Police on Thursday identified the officer who was shot multiple times while responding to a domestic call on Sherman Street between Broadway and Paderewski Drive.

Hurst continues to recover in Erie County Medical Center. Police say he was shot six times during the violent encounter with the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Minhaz Siddiqui of Buffalo. He, too, was shot and wounded in the incident and remained hospitalized in stable condition in ECMC Thursday afternoon.

Hurst was struck once in each calf, once in the upper thigh, once in the upper arm, and twice in his bulletproof vest. The latter two bullets struck his radio and his taser.
