Reggaetón didn’t come from boardrooms — it came from the caseríos, from Afro-Boricua youth, from raw DIY studios. And because it came from that Puerto Rico — poor, Black, loud, unfiltered — the government and the Christian right tried to shut it down.

In the 90s and early 2000s, police raided record shops, seized cassettes, fined drivers, and called the music “dangerous,” “demonic,” and “a threat to values.”
But all that censorship did the opposite.

The more they tried to bury reggaetĂłn, the louder it got.

Underground reggaetón was dark dembow loops, homemade beats, real stories — caserío life, struggle, police pressure, sexuality, survival. It was the voice of a generation they couldn’t control.

They failed.
The youth didn’t fold.
The culture didn’t break.

What started as “illegal” cassettes is now one of the most streamed genres in the world — a movement led by legends like Tego, Ivy Queen, Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Wisin & Yandel, Calle 13, Bad Bunny and more.

Reggaetón didn’t just survive suppression
 it dominated the globe.
