Lets talk about three recruiting "myths" out there...
Myth: JUCO Years don't count against NCAA eligibility -- THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST ONES OUT THERE....
Fact: YES THEY DO. There was a court ruling stating they shouldn't but currently there is only a waiver process for impacted athletes that would allow them to compete with an extra year. But the waiver must be applied for and approved. There *MAY* be a bigger ruling on this in the future but for the moment, the overall eligibility rules haven't changed.
Myth: If you're good enough, they'll find you.
Fact: This is true for the elitist of the elite. Everyone else? The recruiting game has changed. You need to work and put yourself out there. There has never been more of an over saturation of recruiting posts and video than there is out there now. You need to advocate for yourself and get yourself seen. There are a ton of ways to do it. But it starts in the weight room, the cages, and on the field.
Myth: Metrics don't matter
Fact: Metrics matter more than ever. There is a balance to this once you get to the next level. The balance looks like this-- Metrics get you there, performance keeps you there. Throwing 90 will get you looks. A 3:1 walk to K ration will keep you on the bench or looking for a new home. 100mph EV will get you looks in a lineup. But K'ing 3/4 AB's won't keep you there very long. Train for metrics, AND train to put those metrics to practical use.
5 statements that should raise a red flag of when someone is trying to help you through the recruiting process:
1. You're ready for college (No, you're not. Keep working)
2. You could start for them (Ask that person when the last time he watched the team he claims you could start for play baseball. If its been a while, they may be off base)
3. Junior College isn't for high academic guys (Junior College doesn't mean Junior Education)
4. "I can get you to *insert level here*" (Is this a sales tactic? Is there proof they can do it? How do you stack up compared to the guys they've gotten to that level before? and getting you there doesn't mean you belong there, or will succeed there....never forget that)
5. "Don't worry, you can just be a walk on..." *specifically with high levels* (We all love a good underdog story. But lets be honest, those stories are the exception, not the norm. If you're trying to walk on at a D1, or high level program, and the coach doesn't even know your name...its unlikely to work out....)
