The job will always take some space.

For first responder families, that can mean missed dinners, changed plans, occasions celebrated on a different day, or learning to make the most of whatever time you have together.

Families become flexible because they have to.

But flexibility shouldn’t mean that family life always comes second.

In the latest Through the Collective Lens article, I take a closer look at the space the job takes up in family life, and what can get lost when everything starts revolving around the demands of the work.

🧠 Your internal dialogue shapes your external reality. If you keep feeding your mind doubt, hesitation, and fear, you’ll start living those words without even realizing it.

But if you fuel it with confidence, courage, and belief, you’ll naturally rise to meet higher standards.

Your mind is always listening—even when you don’t realize you’re speaking. So be intentional.

Replace “I can’t” with “I will.” Swap “What if I fail?” with “What if I fly?”

Every thought plants a seed. Over time, those seeds grow into habits, actions, and outcomes.

Train your mind like you would train a muscle—with repetition, positivity, and challenge.

Your future success depends on the words you repeat to yourself today. Choose them wisely.❤️🔥

God forbid a woman loves binge-watching first responder bodycam footage and grown adults acting completely unhinged. 💀😂

For a while now, I've wanted a place to write about the things that don't always have a place in everyday conversation.

Not tactical lessons.
Not productivity tips.

Just honest perspectives on the human side of service.

The thoughts we replay.
The conversations we avoid.
The weight we carry that no one else sees.

So I started a publication called Through the Collective Lens.

My first post, People Think You're Tired, is now live.

If it speaks to something you've been feeling but haven't quite found the words for, I'd love to have you join me.

I started something new. ✨

Through the Collective Lens is a space for the conversations, and perspectives that often go unspoken especially in the public safety community.

If you've ever felt that the hardest parts of the job are the ones no one talks about, this space was created with you in mind.

Follow along on the human side of service.

Everyone says they’re choosing themselves.

But most people are just choosing what feels familiar and calling it alignment.

Choosing yourself isn’t about comfort.
It’s about honesty.

It’s noticing where you keep delaying decisions because indecision feels safer than responsibility.
It’s seeing how often you wait to feel ready instead of becoming capable.
It’s realizing you don’t lack confidence — you lack follow-through.

Here’s the part people don’t like to hear:
You grow the most in the environments that demand more from you.

Not the ones that soothe you.
Not the ones that endlessly validate you.
The ones that expose your patterns.

Your inconsistency.
Your need for approval.
Your habit of quitting when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

This is why “working on yourself” often turns into a loop.
You gain awareness, but nothing changes because nothing is required of you.

Real self-choice looks different.

It’s choosing standards over moods.
Choosing discipline over motivation.
Choosing the path that forces you to regulate your emotions instead of being ruled by them.

You don’t become confident by thinking differently.
You become confident by keeping promises when it’s uncomfortable.

You don’t become grounded by understanding yourself more.
You become grounded by acting in alignment even when your nervous system protests.

Choosing yourself means choosing the version of your life that doesn’t let you stay the same.

Not because you hate who you are.
But because you respect who you could become.

So if things feel uncomfortable lately — good.
That’s not a sign you’re doing it wrong.

That’s the cost of becoming someone you can actually trust.
