BANG: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA • 1969-current
Bang, a powerhouse rock trio from Philadelphia, burst onto the scene in 1969 with Frank Ferrara on bass and vocals, Frankie Gilcken on guitar, and Tony Diorio handling drums and lyric writing. Blending heavy riffs with hook-driven melodies, they carved out a unique space in the early ‘70s rock landscape, helping lay the groundwork for what would later be called heavy metal.
Their 1972 self-titled debut introduced listeners to their weighty sound, with the single “Questions” even breaking into the Billboard Hot 100. But before that, they had recorded Death of a Country in 1971—a dark, conceptual record that Capitol Records shelved, fearing it was too intense for a debut release. The album would see the light of day decades later with a long-overdue proper release from pioneering proto-metal excavator, Lee Dorrian at Rise Above Relics, solidifying its place in underground rock lore.
Bang followed up with Mother/Bow to the King and Music, albums that hinted at their evolving musical direction—but internal changes and a lack of label support eventually took their toll. By 1974, the band called it quits. After a long break, Bang resurfaced in the late ’90s with Return To Zero and later The Maze. In 2023, they returned once again with Another Me, straightforward hard rock record that echoed the raw energy of their early years. Today, Bang stands as a cult favorite in the heavy rock realm—undoubtedly credited as a key influence on the development of heavy metal.
