Some more reference photos. The first one is the artist Bernie Safran. He often posed for his own reference photos, probably because it was easier than hiring a model. The other two seem to be photographs that the other artists just used as a reference point (or even manipulated like an early form of Photoshop). I don't know the artists for those, but the woman in the doorway is Elke Sommer, and the one singing is Abbe Lane.

Austin Briggs (September 8, 1908 – October 10, 1973) Born in Humboldt, Minnesota and grew up in Detroit, Michigan before moving to NYC to work as an illustrator. He started out working for a few ad agencies before illustrating for the pulp mag, Blue Book. He was assistant to the cartoonist Alex Raymond on the Flash Gordon series and did a lot of work for the Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, and other magazines in the 50s and 60s.

People credit Haddon Sundblom's version of Santa Claus for Coca-Cola as the creator of the Santa Claus look we all recognize. But J.C. Leyendecker definitely had that look down before Sundblom's first Coke ad in 1931. I know Leyendecker didn't create this version either, but Saturday Evening Post was in most US households at this time - possibly more prevalent than the Coke ads. But what do I know? By the way, have a great Christmas Eve, everyone.

What is American Pulps?

American Pulps channels the unhinged lunacy of the post war men’s magazines that influenced everything from Film Noir to 80s Action flicks. We bring you the very best in Neo-Pulp Fiction. Our work is jam packed with hardboiled crime, sci-fi, horror, and two fi**ed glory.
