Earlier this week, saxophonist and bandleader Cleto Escobedo III passed away at age 59. Escobedo formed the band Cleto and the Cletones in 1995, a project that later brought his father back into the touring world when the group became the house band for Jimmy Kimmel Live! during the show’s 2003 debut. Prior to taking on that role, he built an impressive career touring and recording with major artists, including Paula Abdul, Marc Anthony, and Philip Bailey.
Cleto was beloved for the kindness and support he shared with everyone around him. CenterStaging technician Gabriel Serrano, who has worked with Cleto for years on Jimmy Kimmel Live! stated, “My heart hurts so much for my JKL family. My old boss. Pops and his mom. His family. My sincere condolences. Cleto was an amazing man. It was an honor to watch him play alongside his dad for so many years. I’ll never forget him for all his words over the years and support. May God rest your soul. I love you, bro.”
His spirit, talent, and generosity will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. Rest in peace Cleto.
