A Burn Ban has been placed for Newton County‼️

7 day Emergency Burn Ban

A Message from Newton County Judge Ronald J. Cochran:

Friends and neighbors,

I want to let everyone know that, effective immediately, I’ve issued a 7-day emergency burn ban for all of Newton County. This decision was not made lightly and I want to apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause to our citizens and hunters.
I know how important campfires are this time of year — especially for folks spending time out in the woods. A campfire isn’t just for cooking an staying warm; it’s part of what makes those moments special. Please understand, we do our very best to take those things into account before putting a burn ban in place. We’ve been watching the conditions closely, and the continued dry weather across Southeast Texas has made it too dangerous right now to allow any outdoor burning.

Unfortunately, with the ground and vegetation as dry as it is, even one small spark can start a fire that spreads quickly and puts lives and property at risk. The safety of our citizens, our first responders, and our communities has to come first.

This ban will be enforced, and I’m asking everyone to please do their part to help keep Newton County safe. With a little patience and cooperation, we can get through this dry spell together and lift the ban as soon as conditions improve.

Thank you all for understanding and for continuing to look out for one another.

Respectfully,
Ronald J. Cochran
Newton County Judge

On Thursday, September 18, 2025, at approximately 6:59 p.m., Deputy Brent Sonnier was on patrol near the intersection of County Road 4181 and State Highway 12 when he conducted a traffic stop on a 2003 Ford Explorer for expired registration.
While speaking with the driver, Deputy Sonnier observed several indicators of possible criminal activity. He requested that the driver, identified as Scott Jared Statum, exit the vehicle to further the investigation. As Statum exited, he dropped two clear plastic baggies containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine.
Statum was immediately placed under arrest and transported to the Newton County Jail. The preliminary field weight of the suspected methamphetamine was 6.13 grams.

Stolen UTV recovered in Deweyville:
On Saturday, September 20, 2025, at approximately 10:38 p.m., Deputy B. Sonnier was on patrol near the intersection of Spur 272 and County Road 4141 in Deweyville. Deputy Sonnier conducted a traffic stop on a Honda Pioneer UTV that was being driven on a public roadway. The occupants were identified as Dean Daugherty and Brandi Wilson. An inquiry on the VIN of the UTV revealed that it had been stolen out of Jasper County. Daugherty was subsequently placed under arrest for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. As Deputy Sonnier was placing Daugherty under arrest, Wilson exited the UTV and fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, Wilson was caught but began to resist arrest by pulling away from Deputy Sonnier. Ultimately, Wilson was taken into custody. Both subjects were transported to the Newton County Jail.

Sheriff’s Report

Pursuit – Fugitive Arrest:
On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at approximately 11:15 a.m., Sheriff Colton Havard conducted a traffic stop on a Cadillac Sedan on State Highway 87, just south of the U.S. 190 intersection in the City of Newton, for a traffic violation. The driver, identified as James William Woods Jr., fled from the stop, initiating a vehicle pursuit around the City of Newton before law enforcement lost sight of him.
While officers searched the area, Woods was later spotted operating a four-wheeler. Law enforcement attempted to stop him, but Woods fled once again, leading officers on another pursuit. After approximately fifteen minutes, law enforcement lost sight of Woods. During the search, it was determined that Woods was wanted by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Pardon and Parole for a parole violation (Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant).
Following an extensive search, Woods was apprehended this morning at an apartment complex in Jasper, Texas, by the U.S. Marshals Service, the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division, the Jasper Police Department, and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office. Woods was extremely combative toward officers and was ultimately transported to the Jasper County Jail.
Sheriff Havard extends his appreciation to the Newton Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety CID, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Jasper Police Department. Each agency played a vital role in the investigation and the apprehension of Woods.

During the course of the investigation, deputies gathered evidence and presented it to Justice of the Peace Michael Greer, who issued an arrest warrant on Keyes for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Family Violence).
